When jerks will punch holes in your company vehicle's gas tanks & drain them. :flame:

It might be a sign of desperate times. A new, dangerous trend is surfacing where thieves steal gas by drilling into tanks.

Cases have been reported in Kansas City, Modesto, Calif., Canada and now in Utah at Alpine Home Medical.

Branch manager Greg Dunn is surprised with the way that it was done. "I've heard of people siphoning gas before, but cut the fuel lines and drill through the tank was a little out of the ordinary," he said.

Patched gas tank When we visited him, he checked over the truck that was hit. "This one right here, we patched it up right there. This is the one that was drilled into, and there was just a hole right there," Dunn said.

And the getaway? "Probably just came right under the fence where it's open here. You can lift it up, and they probably just crawled on through," Dunn said.

The bad guys also cut gas lines on another truck and a minivan. A driver figured out what happened when he ran out of gas.

Surveillance cameras weren't angled right, meaning the business and investigators need help to find whoever did this.

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

i've been thinking about this just yesterday when i filled up and it cost me $ 80.oo, it's inevitable these types of theft will spike the higher the cost of gas goes...
perhaps this driling into the tank is an end run around locking gas caps...  :shruggy:

YUP! And then a lawsuit from the victim/thief family. Sue the car owner and the manufacturer. They shouldnt have had such a dangerous thing just sitting out in their driveway. The manufacturer should have designed a much safer tank.

But some tanks are plastic now so that makes it easier.

They are also cutting cats off cars too for scrap.

You would drill the hole at the bottom of the tank. Not only so you get the lowest level, but so you hit pure gasoline. It is the vapors mixed with air that is combustible.

Last week we had someone go through several of our work trucks and swipe the cats off of them. It's easy, just grab your battery operated sawz-all and you can have one off in less than 30 seconds. Our local news said they pay $75.00 for a scrap cat around here.

As a side note, I just ordered $600.00 worth of parts from Year One yesterday.  :D  :icon_smile_big:

Cats literally have a bunch of platinum inside them.  (It's the "active ingredient" so there's no other way to build a cat.)

Any cat is worth money for scrap just because if the platinum.  And if it's a weird model that could possibly be resold used or something, then it would probably be worth even more.

Drilling into tanks has been going on for quite some time here in Detroit. If there is some type of scam, it will usually happen here first.

From what I have heard the main ingredient sought after now is Iridium. It goes for 8K an ounce. But platinum is over 2K an ounce now. Some cats are worth 150.00

Glad I invested in metals when I did before the market went crazy.  I picked up a watch body from an antique (early 1900s) ladies Rolex that was made with 90% platinum and 10% iridium for cheap six years ago on ebay, it is probably a quarter or third oz. of metal.  The majority of catalytic converters have a honeycomb matrix (support) with a slight coating of precious metals .  If you were to smelt the matrix, the actual amount of precious metal that you recover would be less than an ounce of various metals.  Rhodium is another high value metal used in certain catalytic processes, it goes for $9,000+ a troy oz.  My favorite mechanical pencil is plated with that (Ronson pencillighter).  You just never know what you will come across if you really look around at antique stores....

Compare them on eBay to see if yours look like some sold. You can always take them to your local recycler / scrap yard but you get less. I even have been solicited on Craigslist when listing parts.

And you can tell gas prices are getting high when you rush to pay 3.19 before it goes to 3.39  :eek2:
