What type/size of tubing???

Ok everyone, I want to make my own sub-frame connectors this year on my 73.   What is the best size of tubing should I get and what would the minimal thickness be?  I'm not too familiar with guages on metal but I presume they are kind of the same as wiring.  Also, what is the best type of place to buy the tubing from???  Yes, I will be doing a custom job that will look like the ones AutoRust and XV sale where it hugs the floor pan.  I have some ideas on how I want them and how to get things like the e-brake cable and fuels lines feed through. 

So, please let's hear your suggestions.  And no, this car will never be an orginal car since it wasn't worth much when it was...

One more thing, what is the best way to have the car when making/installing these?  Should the car be on stands?  If so, where should the stands be placed??

The closest thing to the thickness of the stock subframe rails in commonly-sold square tubing is probably 14-guage.  A bit thinner than 1/8th of an inch.

But most guys (including me) just use 1/8th inch for any kind of fab work like that.  That's 0.125" on the micrometer.

Ok, well this is when I do have to ask why?  For the price they are from US CAR TOOL and XV, why would you take on this headache to make your own?

I do understand but unless your time and like to be aggrivated by doing this yourself, I think they are well worth the purchase price?  Again just me

Because they don't make them for 73 and up cars. That is why.  I do understand why you think that and I do agree with you Tom.  But also if I can make them for cheaper, why not.  Money is tight enough for me.

No problem. I understand, sometimes it kind of sucks having these later cars cause nobody is hardly doing anything for them but since I've had this car for 20 years (very first car) not really ready to trade it in.  Maybe someday wife will let me have a 68, then I won't have to do things this way.
