If are the same, those are very tipical down here... dunno the official name either... tipically called as "bombonas" and ppl really mount them taking the place of the mufflers. They are a little bit larger though!

usually when they are on the end like that its because they are used as a resonator, not a muffler

don't they also put them in front of a muffler to add some darker tone to an exhaust?

I thought they were just an open pipe with some fiber glass behind the wall of the pipe.  How are they bad on back pressure?

I wouldn't think so, I got 2 of em on my old ford and it runs better than when it had turbos

Misc thoughts...as that is a Taurus, I would think that is a resonator.  Kind of a small muffler made to reduce certain frequencies of sound.  Usually on luxury cars.

Glasspacks are also known as straight-through mufflers.  When I was younger, the prevailing wisdom was that even though they were straight through, they do not have as good a flow as "turbo" mufflers, and that the fiberglass wears out really quick...basically, that they sucked.  Thrush was a popular brand--and the one that people "in the know" said to stay away from.

Now the tables seemed to be turned.  Thrush still sells on Summit for like $100 a muffler, while other performance mufflers are as cheap as in the thirty dollar range.

As a side note, I have glasspacks on both my Super Bee and my AMX.  They are both ancient, got them with the cars.  The cars drive quite well, you would think they had headers on them, but both have stock manifolds.  The mufflers have not changed in tone in the years I have had the cars, nor have they "rotted out".

So much for prevailing wisdom.....
