well I'm on the fence here I like the old racer look nice set of 15" rims with big meats out back but it seems the craze is to go big rims and on some rides they look realy good but I'm not so sure it would look good on my ride.

well these are whats on it now and there nice but they just don't make the state ment im looking for

my question is this if I go 18s how wide can I go in the rear and what effect will it have on ride qaulity??

The present set up isn't going to work out when the 528 goes in.

I would say 18's are  maximum ! You need to have some sidewall on these cars, but if your a after classic Muscle car look ,I would say stay around the 15-17  rims with a Classic style rim.

Personally, Who cares what the trend is. Do something because you like it, not because you want everyone else to like it. Besides, old school is cool. And another way to see it, if you put oversize wheels on it because it is "the trend", then your just being like everyone else, and not doing it because of originality or your own taste and preference. You don't see to many cars out there with the big fat tires like you did in the '70s anymore. So if you do want my opinion, go old school because it is different from todays current trend :Twocents:

I have a 1973 Charger. I did put my SRT 8 20's on it and it looked great.18's would look fine.

I agree with pete 100%  :2thumbs: do what you want and not because its a "trend" having said that, i have seen some mopars which look real good with 17's or 18's (or 17 on front, 18 on the back) its one of those things where if you get the tire/rim combo good it looks great! get it wrong and it looks terrible! I dont mind oversized wheels but its the "rubber band"tires i dont like. imo the sidewalls should be "50"or it just looks too skinney. I have 15's front and rear.

I agree...don't do it cuz its a trend, do it cuz its what you want.

having said that, I think 17's might be the biggest you want to go. It'll feel up the wheel well pretty good, but it won't give your car the "dub" look that only looks good on some newer cars (*cough* LX's *cough*).

Everybody discusses 15" or 17-20" . . .  never any 16" wheels in sight.

Pete said it best, do what makes you happy. I personally like the 15" with meatier tires look myself but its your ride.

I'm thinking 16's for my C500 in the kelsey hayes recalls.  Just two sized over stock and two sizes under being too big.

I like 17's and 18's. The 16 inch is not discussed much because the tire companies have passed it over. It is hard to get a decent sized tire on a 16. I like 18's. I took a wedge out of the front fender of my Wagon to help it clear. The GTX has 17's on the Front and 18's on the back. The Black Charger has 18's all the way around, and the Maroon GTX has 18's all the way around.

I like the stock look on cars too...only 15's....I love a 295 50/15 on the back of a charger with 8 inch wide 15 inch magnums..or Ralleys...Green Charger. The wheels on the brown Charger are the Wheels on the wagon. They looked better on the Wagon.

It's your car, put what YOU like on em I do...

yeah that could be a reason, just old truck stock tires available on 16", not sportier tires for that size.

Seems like there are lots of production cars with 16" tires though.  I can't imagine there would be THAT much trouble finding a decent size.

I think of a 16" rim having a tire sidewall that's in between the "fat tired" old-school appearance and the thin rubber-bands-on-the-rim modern look.  Err towards the fat-tires look, but not as high as the 65-70 series tires that people sometimes put on 15" rims.

charger01

I just dont like the pimped out wheels............not for me.

Brock Samson

i like the look on newer cars, but it seems the larger rims call too much attention to the wheel and the tires are not big enough,..
lookin at mopar-heavens pics, i liked the stock (ish) looking rims better... to my eye the 18s look out of place...
i've givin alot of thought about going with a radical wheel/tire combo on the BSG (road runner) but I think it's one of those things where the idea is better then the reality...
i was thinking of these Polo rims with the nittos,.. mostly cause they look like old school American TTs...

but now i think they are simply way too big which means the tires would have to have a thin sidewall and i don't like that combo..
man those cars are beautiful though!  :2thumbs:

Moparheaven

I think that 17's are the new 15's. They have lots of tire sizes that look good to both sides of this fence. I have some 17's on my Ford Galaxie Covertible. Yes, I know it's a Ford but they interchange with the Mopar bolt pattern.

I think that this option lets you have your cake and eat it too. I try to get the most sidewall height on all my cars that I can fit. If you blow up the pictures that I previously posted you can kinda see that. It's the best you can get on an 18, without modification.

These Wheels are from American Racing and kinda give it a modern nestalgia look and feel. If you order them from American Racing a trick that I learned is to have them Reverse mount the wheel, so it gives it that deep dish look without the stair step look most of them have.

Tell me what you think?

dkn1997

the cars that come with 16's now have really skinny tires. way too skinny for our cars. I run 16's and it's always a bitch to get tires

go a bigger size, but use something with classic styling

Whatever you do, IMHO a musclecar just needs some kind of decent sidewall height.  Especially in back.

I don't think the modern wheel/tire combos will age very well.  At least not on classic musclecars.
In another 15 years, I think we'll look back and think it made about as much sense as putting 14x7" Magnum 500 rims & redline bias-ply tires onto a modern ricer.

If you look at the wheels on dkn1977s' Charger that he posted (Awsome, by the way), you will see that the rim part of the wheel stair steps up to the center design of the wheel, with two steps. If you look at the wheels I posted, both from American Racing company, I had the wheels reverse mounted, so the smooth part is out front where you can see it and the stepped part is on the back side. It makes the depth of the wheel exagerated and deeper looking. I happened accross this by accident. I had a set of wheels made by them and the messed one up. I returned the three and had them reverse mount the rest. Most wheel stores will tell you that it can't be done because they don't know how to order them or they are too lazy, But as you can see, they can do it and it looks WAY better IMO.
