Hello,

I am new to this forum.  I am building a 440 right now and was considering the Mopar lightweight starter motor from Jegs.  Has anybody hear used one of these before?  It says it may require some cutting or grinding for certain applications, will it need to be cut to go on a 68 440?

I believe you can use one of the newer one from say a 89 ish 318?  I am sure someone here will know.  I dont like the aftermarket ones never seem that reliable.

i highly recommend the mini race starter combined with a heat shield thermal blanket, i haven't had a lick of heat sink since i went that route..  :icon_smile_wink:
and i sure as heck did before.  :eek2:

Depending on the starter, you might have to remove the terminal block on the starter to fit it to the engine (see pic)

As far as cutting, some blocks have a bit of casting flash in the recess where the starter sits....this flash might have to be ground off to gain clearance to get the starter to fit flush....

Can anyone confirm that you can buy a ministarter over the counter for a newer Dodge Ram 5.2 or 5.8 and it will fit a 440?

It may not be a lightweight alternative but I found a cheaper alternative.  Autozone has a Duralast starter that matches the original starter and is gauranteed for life for $49.99   I figure I'll buy that as I plan on having the charger for life so I'll never have to buy a starter motor again as long as I keep the receipt in my files.  Thanks for all the input. :2thumbs:

Chris...pretty timely!!

My engine just went on the dyno and couldn't get my lightweight starter on because of the terminal block. Off it goes to get it to fit. Glad I'd seen this tidbit of info prior to that.  :2thumbs:

Ok, I've got the 90 amp 'alt from an '89 Ram so I figure I can go with a starter from a '93 Ram as well.  Is there any kind of modification necessary to perform on the starter?  The block, etc?
