Correct Carter AVS choke adj procedure?

Trying to sort out the correct choke setting procedure for my AVS.  The FSM is no real help in this area....

I have one of the repro "45" chokes bolted to the intake.  I originally had a hard time getting the rod to even fit without jamming up the choke butterfly.  Finally got some advice from 62max I think about loosening the nut on the bi-metallic spring to shorten up the rod a bit but now I think I went too far.
Choke wont set in the AM....and when I manually activate the fast idle, it wont kick down.

HELP!

I'll be dealing with this stuff soon.  You ever get your issues fixed?
Kinda shocked at all the carter avs, help me threads in the search section.  :-\

Not really "fixed" but its better.  I used a "stacked plate" type of a base gasket that gave me a little height to get the rod to fit better.  Im sure with a little more playing I'd get it more reliable but for now Id rather have a hard time starting it due to the choke being open than to not have the choke come off enough

Also the fact that I drilled only a 1/4" hole in my valley tray to let a little heat into the crossover isnt helping matters either!

At least you did that Chris.  I still have it totally blocked off and takes forever to warm up.

the choke set up drove me nuts  ,

but  you have to bend the rod to make it the correct height  ,

i'm ashamed to say  i cant remember exactly  how i done all this now off the top of my head   , but went through every thing  & worked ok for a time but  randomly when not started for a while & colder temps would either load the motor up  or go lean !! & stall ,  also use any sign of throttle when cold ( just even increasing revs a couple of hundred !) would stall or cause it to go rich !!  it would be ok start the car on a cold morning ! one pump the throttle to set the choke  , crank the motor ! start ok & on fast idle 1000 -1200 revs , try to drive it would either stall , by loading up ! or going lean ,then have no choke  when restarted !!   , leave it to warm up 5 minutes etc etc with out touching throttle  would be ok ! richen the idle mixture ! would obviously hepl , but not a good idea( don't) to go more than 2& a 1/2 turns !
also it would do this when i first got the car , but it was missing the heat riser (then !! but fitted one ! well repoped mainfolds)) then prolly always being ok , & never caused a problem to the previous owners being a texas car  :scratchchin:
( but for me lifes too short ) to keep messing about  even when all the parts are new  , that was the reason i went for a manual choke
but did get it working as it should most of the time  , as long as you leave the car to warm up before driving  :scratchchin: :shruggy: but i don't mind admitting it beat me  :cryin: :icon_smile_blackeye: or perhaps that how they were back then ! but i doubt it  :scratchchin: :popcrn:, i'll work on something for hours /days weeks  :o to get it right or problem solving , but
cant see how it could work any different    :icon_smile_blackeye: me & avs bimetalic chokes/heat risers are done !! they beat me  :cryin: :icon_smile_blackeye: :yesnod:

My Carter is on it's way, but I have an electric choke that works great on my Eldebrock.  Why can't the same electric choke be added to the Carter?  Or do guys feel it would look incorrect.

i bet  the eldelbrock  electric choke housing set up would  bolt up to  where the Carter OEM choke Vacuum diaphragm  is mounted with little or no modification  :scratchchin: ,  as eldelbrock is a copy of a carter ,  just need to spend time adjusting the choke movement to the fast idle cam  :yesnod:

Please don't make fun of my fuel line, Chris did. That's a repro correct line and when I get the carter on there it will fit in nice. Here's my electric choke and I'm sure I can put it on the carter carb from the pictures I've seen. May have to drill and tap but I think there are places there to mount it like on the Edelbrock.  I have no problems with my choke, it works fine.  Loads up a tad at first but warms up fast and opens right up.
