If so, where? I read somewhere once they leaked in the trunk from factory, is this true?

JimShine

I have a couple leaks in the back. One is the right rear window corner, the others are at the vinyl top trim check mark mounting posts.

Same here with where the trim check mark molding is.  Had to use butyl tape to seal it up.  I also have a leak arond the bottom corners of my windshield.

Like a friggin sieve!  I keep a few pieces of torn up chamois cloth in the trunk for that errant rain shower I ALWAYS seem to get caught in......also a small tarp for these torrential downpours I ALWAYS seem to get stuck in at Carlisle :rotz:

I guess it's a 2nd Gen thing none of my 3rd Gens leaked, except through the rust holes in the roof. Maybe the mopar gods are telling all of you to buy 3rd Gens instead.

"Maybe the mopar gods are telling all of you to buy 3rd Gens instead."  Nice try but I think everyone knows 69 is the way to go.  Of course the 68 and 70 guys refuse to admit it, but they know.  :nana:

proud to say so far no leaks but i spent lots of time getting it there the problem with the bottom corners of the windshield is usually because there isnt enuff sealer   when i did my windshield i loaded and i mean loaded it up with liguild butyl made a heck of a mess but little clean up is worth saving my floor boards  also new gaskets in wiper pivots  another  problem for leakage the factory installed the back glass with butyl tape we reinstalled it with urethane and thats usually 100% leak proof not to mention stronger i dont have a vinyl top so no trim work there for leaks new trunk seal i havnt had it in a rain storm yet but i have pushed it out to wash it a few times and erverything looks good to go

part of the charm of an old car is water leaks!

ChargerRob

My Charger leaks so much that every time I wash it, I have to dry the inside as much as I do the outside.
One of the advantages of living in SoCal is very and I mean very little rain. Just one less headache to deal with.  :coolgleamA:

Charming isn't exaclty what comes to my mind whenever the drops hit my ankles.  :flame:

So is there any truth then about the leaks in the trunk from factory?

Cars in general back then leaked.  Not all of them by any stretch but tolerances were much looser than today and materials differed somewhat.  Air leaks, water leaks, squeeks and rattles were a hell of a lot more common in all models of cars back then.  Were water leaks in the trunk a common 69 Charger problem?  No, no more than any other car then.

Having the "Nice" weather that we have here in the UK i'd never drive my cars if I waited for dry days so I tend to drive my cars in all conditions

472 R/T SE

The picture of both Chris' cars show they don't melt.  It warms my heart seeing such nice cars driven regardless of weather conditions.  :2thumbs:

I'm lucky, I get maybe an ounce or two in the trunk.  First car I've owned that didn't leak like a sieve.  My first Mope I left out in the rain one time and water came out when I opened the door, was parked on a slope and the rear floor pans were full.  It obviously had rust free floors.  That car's wiper pivot's were shot and the water would pour in.

My buddy's '70 RR is a bad leaker so the rain's not prejudice.

There's a spot 40 miles north of here that if it's gonna rain, it'll happen there on our jaunts to Seattle.  The Seattle boyz don't have to worry about that cause they're too afraid to drive in the rain.  :stirthepot:

six-tee-nine

Anyone here never tried to get rid of them damn leaks then?
Or have you guys gave up on getting it sealed.

If it is up to me....I'll take out my windshield as many times as it takes to get a leak sealed....If I want to get wet when it raines the i'll drive my bike. IMO cars were invented to STAY dry in them.

sick dawg

Before  my black 69 was redone it sounded like a tank truck without baffles in the trunk. When I'd go around a corner or slam on the brakes,  I could hear the water slosh around in the trunk after a good heavy rain. Now I get a few drips, but the quarters aren't filled up anymore.

Mike DC

Yeah, it's just a product of the era in which they were built.

According to the market research of the time, most new car buyers only kept their car for 3 years.  Five at the most.

Stop and think about that for a second.  It means the factory originally thought a 1969 Charger only needed to operate in good condition until 1971-73.  There was virtually no factory concern about resale value in those days.
