Ok, so I adopted a dog but he has a name that I really don't like. He really doesn't care much what you call him and he only had that name for about 5 weeks any way so I'm sure he won't be permanently scarred. He's about a year old, real easy-going, funny, and pretty hyper when he's not sleeping. He's been here since last Sunday but I just can't come up with a good name. I'm hoping you all can help - and hoping this goes better than the last time I asked for help with a name...  :nana: I'm also trying to avoid Hemi, Cuda, Magnum, or other overused Mopar names.

Gunner?, Duke?

Congrats on the new pup

Charger_Fan

Fred.

Or if you prefer something with a little more class, use my cat's name...Oglethourpe. :icon_smile_big: "Thorpedo" (if he's a fast runner) works too. :icon_smile_tongue:

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

We named our shephard puppy "Shredder" when we got him in 1992. Little did we know that he would live up to his name. He's been an excellent "Roving security system" for many years. He'll be 16 in July, if he makes it that long. Best dog I've ever had or ever will have I'm sure.

He's a Lab - probably the worst guard/watch dog on the planet. He's barked exactly twice in a week and if you have food he'll let you steal everything in sight - but try to play with it at the same time. Luckily, he hasn't dug anything yet.

He seems like a regular, fun-loving, working guy so I think he deserves a name that matches (Jake, Duke, Max, Jack, etc.) but these fit as well:

That's fitting actually - he pulls like one. The other dogs stop when they get wrapped up or stuck but he just hunkers down and pulls until something snaps. He's plowed over a couple of small trees and broke a limb off another already. Unfortunately, I have to keep him tied on the run because he's an accomplished fence jumper. The funny thing is, he comes back the same way. It's all a game to him so it doesn't matter which direction he's going. We have a lot more wildlife than his last home though so he has a whole lot more to chase. He has learned that some cats have claws and most aren't as excited as he is to find a playmate. I'm dreading the day when he catches up to one of the groundhogs...

Someone else suggested Ricochet and, now that he's comfortable in his new home, it's very fitting. He uses walls, furniture, and even people as springboards when he's playing. He learns quick though so he knows he can't leap over the leather couch any more.  :RantExplode:

One thing though, for a retriever, he certainly sucks at retrieving. He will chase whatever you throw but then he does a sort of "fly by" on the object and his attention goes elsewhere. As expected, he is very gentle when picking anything up and he doesn't bite down hard. It took him about four days to learn one of his toys had a squeaker - and now he's scared of it. He loves riding around in the truck but we have to work on getting out since he tries to go through the driver's door as soon as I touch the handle which generally results in a 40 pound dog in my lap firmly wedged between my chest and the steering wheel. The other dogs have harnesses and seat belts so we're going to the store today to pick up his.

I was looking at Shepherds but it seemed like the good ones were always picked out of the shelters quickly - I am a rescue type of person so buying from a breeder was out of the question. I found several that I really meshed with but two were HUGE. I'd like to get a second dog since I'm not always around and having to feed 200 pounds worth of animals wasn't appealing. It's great that you've had yours for so long and it's sad that they do get old.

I wasn't even looking at Labs but this one sort of found me. If he starts shredding anything inside we're going to have issues. :D

You could name him "Bo" since he likes to jump. :icon_smile_big:

A Mopar related name, even though your trying to avoid them, might be "Shaker" :shruggy:

Otherwise, name him after Big Jakes dog and just name him "Dog".

I'd just give it more time and see what comes to you. Almost every pet I've had has gotten a nickname based on its personality that ended up being better than the standard name I gave it. Our dog was named Jessie while at the animal control facility but we eventally came up with the name Poobah after a few years of being around her. I had a tomcat when I was a kid that I gave the standard name Tiger and that eventually turned into Tigger which eventually turned into Digger. Just let it slide and see what you come up with on your own.

I had considered "Bo" (especially since I'll likely get a black dog soon), not sure about "Shaker", but I call him "Dog" most of the time now. This works since my nieces can only say "dog, dog" as they're chasing him around. One asked me if she could hold his leash and I had visions of a screaming child bouncing through the mud at high speed behind him (see the comment above about pulling). It would have been funny buuuuut...

bull: That's the way it's shaping up right now.

Mrs.Skip68: I thought about Flash when he first got here since he has those big hound dog jowls and he slept a lot. Definitely nothing like Rosco's Flash now! I almost got a black and white Akita mix but he got adopted by someone else. Ninja would be a cool name for one.

Yeah Bryan, I know - but thanks for pointing that out.  :eek2:

Mally: Buddy, Butch, Boo, and Frank are definitely out (other dogs in the family).

Yeah, but I'm a 68 guy... :D

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! He still ignores any name that I call him but he comes bounding across the room if I whistle or snap. We start commands training tonight so that should be entertaining. I think "stay" will be the primary goal. We practiced exiting the vehicle several times yesterday and he's much better when he's worn out from evading small children - probably because I can shut off the engine, remove my seatbelt, and hop out the door before he wakes up enough to know what's going on.

Troy,

I hope I can help you with some names! Our dog (14 mo old German Shepherd puppy) was named Roxy by my 8-year old daughter before we got her (Christmas gift). My pet names for her are "Ditz", and "Sharp Tooth" (a bit mouthy, but all puppies go through this) and Toots (don't ask). She is as blond as her sister and Mom (my daughter and wife  :P ) but loves to chase balls, herd other dogs and eat people food.

Some other dogs she runs with, out at our local dog park, are Mira (black lab), Hershey (chocolate lab), Daisy (Beagle), Foster (Aussie sheep dog), Kuma (tiny sheep dog), Kehei (pit bull mix), Tan (tan colored pit bull mix) and Bella (another Beagle). In-laws have Shepherds (Buddy D and Arcus) and Chocolate labs (Kody (short for Kodiak) and Molly). I hope these names help, but eventually the canines name themselves.

69_500

So did you decide on a name yet Troy?

I named my dog R/T. Only problem is when we go to the VET they try to spell it out as "Artie" which is when I correct them. Other dogs name is Six Pac. Yeah I know, but she doesn't seem to mind.

472 R/T SE

Yeah we did the Mopar theme too.  "Hemi" is the male, "Cuda" is the female, Bengal cats.  My 7 year old little girl always asks why I have our cat's name written on the hood.  ;)

Bobs69

RED.  You said he is dark orange and sort of looks red??  Like the father on "That 70's show"  RED.  Short and simple, the dog will remember it easy, and I think it's easy to yell!

I knew a girl that named her lab Socks.  Short for Socratease (best spelling I could manage)
I knew another girl that named her lab Bauer.  Shot, not sure about that spelling either.  Bauwer like the ice skates.

69_500

Troy, people wanna know. So which name did you finally decide on? I'm assuming it wasn't any of the ones mentioned.
