Bought a 71 roadrunner, with a 440 with a small edelbrock carb. Idles ok but when you give it any amount of gas, it sputters and sounds like its running on 5 cylinders, changed plugs, wires, bumped the timing around a little. any ideas?

Try the Power valve in the carb (easy fix) or it's a bad fuel pump that only pumps enough to idle the car. I kept blaming the bowls for being empty on 440 w/ a 800cfm, but it turned out to be the fuel pump.
"Let me explain something to you, um i am not Mr. Lebowski, you're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the dude, so that's what you call me. That or his dudeness, or duder, or you know, el duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing."

Eddy carb is a Carter clone so it has no power valve to check.  Is it just the acceleration mode that makes it sputter or does it continue to do it all the time even once it's underway?

Bogging is a product of a lean mixture. Check the float levels and make sure it's getting enough fuel. What size carb is on this engine ?

My eldlebock was doing the same thing about 5 years ago. I think my father put bigger jets in it. It would make sense if it is running lean like Ron suggested!

its probably the points and condenser in your distributor. Do you have a dwell meter?
life's a garden, dig it.

its got electronic ignition, a 750cfm carb, dont know what a dwell meter is?  I just got the car, It needs a lot of work & when i started foolin around with it, I found that the firing order was all messed up on the distributer, I changed it, I found the #1 plug at top dead center on compression stroke, had #1 plug wire there & went counter clockwise 18436572, runs better but not above idle. maybe dist in wrong or off a tooth or 2 on cam gear?? Fuel pump?? I guess just go through & address one thing at a time??
