I recall there are a couple of guys on here who were using Schubeck lifters but I was wondering if there are many more?   I like the hype about them personally but I can't see that the cost is justified for the typical street car.

When you wipe your cam out out on startup like my buddy did with his hemi twice , you will !!! He did !!!!

Ghoste

Or, you could find a break in oil with enough zinc in it to do the job.  I hear what you're saying but if the Schubeck lifters were the only option then it seems to me that they wouldn't be able to keep up with demand.

daytonalo

Look into , way more than Zinc , yes that is needed , but the steel used in most lifters is Substandard !!!!!Do you homework or Kaboom !!!!!!!

Well, homework is what this is about.  If good oil isn't the only solution and the Schubecks use a patented process, shouldn't every aftermarket, performance, antique, non oem engine rebuild be using them?  Wouldn't the aftermarket cam makers be ordering them?  In fact, wouldn't they be madatory to prevent warranty claims?

daytonalo

I was told that many lifters are made in china ( go wonder ) and the steel they use is a problem . I will end with this , my buddy wiped out two cams on start up . and he is no idiot , the engine builder insisted he use Schubeck and it worked out .  Keep us up to date with your outcome 1

You bring up a good point about China.  Wasn't an American lifter mfg. about to start up again or not go out of business after all or something like that recently?

my understanding is,  the ceramic faced lifters are getting hard to get because the military is snagging up all the materials.        did your buddies hemi wipe the same lobe both times?  did they verify the lifters were rotating in the bore?.   what spring presures were being used during break in?   my understanding is, that when you used the ceramic faced lifters you have to increase the spring preasure, and if the valve floats then the lifters are prone to shatter and i guess that really ugly. i have no first hand knowledge of the ceramic faced lifters though, just what ive read.

it seems the hot new trick is the edm lifters,   its a small hole in the face of the lifter to lube the cam.      comp cams has always used american made lifters.  johnson lifters is the lifter company thats now making american made lifters again that are suposed to be of good quality.

I don't think the Schubecks are ceramic faced though are they?

471_Magnum

I believe Schubeck is out of business. Somebody else is making a similar lifter.

Need to do a quick search on the subject over at Moparts.

Schubecks used a ceramic puck that was bonded to the lifter. Problem was, the bond failed with annoying frequency and catastrophic results.

I thought they were back in business and that it was some kind of bonded alloy??

Scubec went out of business and someone else started making them. Like 471 said there were lots of reported failures and unhappy customers. The concept was good but the exection was poor towards the end....seemed like quality control was lacking for whatever reason.  :P

The EDM solids with priority lobe oiling seems like the best way to go these days. Keeping the valvespring pressures reasonable and using good oil & additives to make it last is just common sense.  :Twocents:

Okay.  Now just for my own knowledge, the Schubecks being made by this new company, are they using a ceramic bonded to it or an alloy of some type?

ceramic pucks on those as well.  ceramic is a neat material. i watch the history channel alot and watched a show about blades.  aperently ceramic blades are really sharp and stay sharp for along time,  but they can only be used in fixed aplications because they are so brittle.
