I recently bought a 1967 Mercury Cougar as a flip project. I've been driving it daily for the past few weeks. Its got a 289 2V. I found it gets about 17-18 MPG. I've heard it would get better MPG with a 4V. Anyways its actually really nice to get good gas mileage, especially if you drive the car a lot. So what do you guys get on your 318s? When I sell this cougar I think I'd like to get another 68-72 mopar with a 318 or 340...

BigBlackDodge

Last I checked I got 15-17.   Thats with 3.23 a 600 cfm eddy carb and driving sensibly..........hahahaha. Not alot of stop and go traffic either.

i get about 17 with a edelbrock 550cfm carb.  Its great in my 68 charger, saves lots of gas, but everyone thinks that all chargers came with power. Everbody always wants me to spin the tires. :eyes:
life's a garden, dig it.

i believe i get 17-18, but thats in the duster. its got the tiny 7 1/4. highway gears. a warmed over 318. 600 cfm eddy. and six pak scoop. it may be a little more than that. my speedo and odometer dont work so i can't be too sure.
looking for another one

I sold a 74 Charger with a 318/904 last year and the guy calls me up after his 250 mile drive home to tell me he got better than 20 mpg. It was bone stock except for 15" wheels.

69_500

Lets see here in the 69 SE I sold I was getting 18.5 mpg and that was in a 318 2bbl, with a 3.55 sure grip rear end. Running on stock 14" tires. That was as long as I was running around 65 mph on the highway. Averaged around 15 mpg total in the time I had the car.

terrible one

Hehe, the '73 Dart choptop I got from Trav averaged that exact mpg with the same combo. Beautiful!

Thats some pretty crappy gas mileage  :o

I put a K&N filter in and one of those vortec aluminum TB spacer and it didn't seem to help much. I need to change the rear gear. It weighs 5,400. It is hard to believe since I had a 79 ford extended cab long bed with a 400 and it weighed 4,600. I did add nerf bars and a front brush guard.
