I found a 8 3/4 housing with backing plates and drums and a 489 3.55 center section for $700.  It has no axles though.  Do you guys think this is a good price?  and is this a good place to buy the axles?  http://www.marketworks.com/StoreFrontProfiles/DeluxeSFItemDetail.aspx?sid=1&sfid=92390&c=68053&i=231403606

I got my 8 3/4 from a 72 Rallye Charger, complete with everything and a 489 case 3.23 open center section for $200.  I even managed to get the rear sway bar setup included in that price.

I dont really know what the market value is right now though.  I just got lucky when I found mine, it was obviously a deal and I grabbed it.

I would go with a new part, Yukon, $360 sold by same seller ( I got it from him, waiting to get it at home, is on the sea right now, if not lost in the bermudas triangle LOL  ), and then fit the pinion set you want ( I have NOS MOPAR 3.55 set to 489 that it wants to go ;), also a 3.91 to 741 )

mostly sure you don't need housing, backing plates etc... so spending money on that is not worth ( plus shipping )

depends on where you live i guess, i bought a bare housing with axles for 150,installed new bearings and seals, bartered a 3.91 center for a 3.55,asked a friend to help install the plate type sure grip, and had another buddy help me put it under the car and heave hoe the 8 1/4,i think after it was all said and done i have about 400 into the complete rear end,re used the brakes etc,but with no center section at all,i guess its not a terrible price

Im in Binghamton NY. I've been looking for some time but this seems to be the best deal I've come up with yet, I need the whole setup as I have a 8 1/4 in the car currently

Oh, ok, that's a diff story then.

anyway, open diff deals are around $300 OR CHEAPER as far I can recall right now, complete from drum to drum. then the suregrip from Mopars P&S on $360, that makes more less $700 shipped and complete.

also depends about conditions and how much can you make by yourself.

be sure axled you get is 71/72, not 73/74 to make an easier plug and play job on your 72

is the only difference between the 71-72 and the 73-74 the size of the hole in the spring perch (and the rubber pad mounting setup on the 73-74)? Have you seen any open diff complete setups for sale recently?

Nacho-RT74

and height... shorter on 73/74 to compensate the extra clamps and isolators assembly. 73/74 axle would make sit higher rear end

I haven't seen anyone recently because I haven't been watching anyone ( no need for, I have 3 assemblies ), but if they are not now, they will float on. Lot of Coronets, Satellites, etc...
