I have a 73 charger SE with an automatic.  Today out of the blue I lost reverse trying to get our of my buddies drive way.  The linkage looks ok under the car from what I can tell.  Any way I can check to see if its the rear band without having to drop the tranny?

thanks for any ideas on this one.

mine done the same thing last may, just stopped workign out of no where, no noise or anything, stays in first gear, i took the pan out put new filter in, still didnt help, but if theres a bunch of metal in the pan, its probably gonna have to come out. :Twocents:

I agree with Nacho its most likely a broken reverse band, my pick-up did that to me several years ago it lost reverse so I pulled the pan and filter off and the strut that goes between the reverse band and the apply lever was just lying there so I had to pull the tranny out and pull it all apart to put a new reverse band in. Other possibilities are something bad in the valve body or the high-reverse clutch, which is the first clutch pack you see when you take the front pump out, is bad.

How does it work in the foward gears, is third gear OK because if it is you may have a bad O-ring on the reverse servo which is an easy in car fix.

3rd felt fine. I drove it about 5 miles home after I lost 3rd.  If my forward gears hold up I might just leave it like this till next fall and swap out the tranny.  Its just my luck because friday I dropped 1200 bucks on a set of new heads and rockers for 440 source and then my tranny takes a shit on me.  Thats my life story.  That car knows when I spend money and then takes it out on me every time.

is easy to check if that's the reason without drop, just removing pan... now try to mount without drop... I don't think so. Needs to be dropped and dissasembled

Once I got loosen push strud on band ( I think it was the OD band ) because bad adjust and ends got toward up. Made to hook one of ends with a wire all around the drum and pull it hard to get it on right position, but THAT's a diff stuff, since was already fit around drum

Don't make any decisions until the pan is removed, it's just as likely that a blown seal or dropped link is the cause as is a broken band or anchor linkage.

The first two can be repaired in place, the last two require removal/disassembly.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Thats good to know.  I dont know much about transmissions and always viewed them as a "Black Box of Magic Parts".

I had a 73 Satellite/RR clone a few years back that didnt have reverse either.  I used it as a daily driver to work and back for about a year and everything worked fine, just no reverse.  Luckily it was a big parking lot and I could park in the back...  sideways.   ;D

Well I got lucky I guess.  I bought a book on the 727 and took a shot at trouble shooting the issue. it turned out to be an adjustment on the rear band is all it needed.  The bolt that sets the arm for the reverse band was as loose as you could get it.  I took her down to 6ft pounds and it works like a champ.
