I guess I'll throw in my storys...........

The night before Thanksgiving last year I left work at about 10:30pm. Heading to the bank $ machine to get some cash to go get a burger and frys to eat as I got home. Suddenly I had lights flashing behind me and my old 74 Dodge truck. Cop gets out and asks me if I knew why I was pulled over. I responded by answering that he was out looking for drunks. After taking my license and running it he asked me for proof of insurance. After a few minutes of me digging thru my glove box and going thru 15 insurance cards I didnt have the newest date card.............So being the villian law breaking POS that I suddenly became I was written a ticket for no proof of insurance. He hands me the ticket and his last words out of his mouth was your tailights are working now I could have swore you had a light out......... it was his lying that gave him the legal reason to pull me over.

As I pulled out of the bank parking lot there were 3 other cop cars with people pulled over and he pulled out of the lot and was instantly on the next poor driver coming down the road and had him pulled over. I see this kind of stuff happen all the time in my town and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I certainly hope no one in town was getting raped, robbed or was about to lose their life waiting on 911 to dispatch the next available cop because several of them were busy with BS!

8 years ago about midnight I was on my way home in my Honda Prelude.  I suddenly was pulled over. I asked what was wrong and they replied I had "loud exhaust". After running my license and seeing that a sober fat grey haired guy in overalls with his hat on right was in the "Lude" they sent me on my way. There were plenty  Semi Trucks rolling by as I was stopped that were 10 times louder then my little Honda car.

Bottom line is a traffic cop can stop you for no reason and he can write you out as many tickets as he sees fit. No matter if he knows the law or not. You then get to take the day off of work missing pay and or having to pay out $ to a lawyer and get the BS charges/tickets dropped. After your expense thats the end of it. Cop still keeps writing out tickets to other people. Its no wonder the courts are bogged down. There is no penalty for the law being wrong. They dont reimburse you expenses you had happen because of some dumbass traffic cop.

Due to society and the laws of this country I cant take care of problems myself like I would like to do. I have to call the cops. Now I know why it takes so long for them to get to my house!

I have one question/comment about your arguments, Todd. You cited an incident 8 years ago and one last year but how many trips do you take in and around your town each year? If you're like me you probably get in a vehicle and drive somewhere 300+ times a year and many of those days you get in and make two, three or four trips a day that total 2-20 miles each time. I'd say I see at least one cop car 50% of the time I go somewhere and yet I'm like you, I've maybe been stopped by the police three times in the past 8-10 years. And I would say I exceed the speed limit at least once per trip, often more. In fact, I can honestly say that pretty much any trip I make, be it one mile or 300, I have deserved a citation. But what trip per stop percentage are we talking here? I'll be conservative and say out of the approximate 3,000 trips I've made in the past 10 years (I bet it's probably more than twice that though) I've been pulled over three times and was given one citation. I'm not very good at figuring percentages so someone help me out here. Isn't that like .0001% of the trips I've made have resulted in a police stop and 1/3 of that number has resulted in a citation? Pretty trouble free IMO.

We should start threads about rude and annoying people in every line of work if we're going to single out cops. I seriously doubt there is a higher percentage of bad apples in the US police force than in any other type of career.

Bad apples are one thing, bad apples with a gun/tazer and a badge is another.  They should be held to a higher standard and one bad apple does give the entire batch a bad name for a reason.

If someone who works at a store is rude to me I can say "well I am never coming here again" when a cop is rude I have to keep my mouth shut or I might become bloody in the bottom of a jail.  And charged with all kinds of BS charges.  It happens every day.

I am sure some good cops exist.  The problem is the other small % running around with a gun and a chip on their shoulder with this "you are on my ground" line of thinking that goes against the rights we have as citizens.

I can tell you about the time my son and me were held up with a pipe in the woods when all we had were fishing poles.  I went to the cops and nothing ever happened and they never even tried to search for the guy who did it.

I can tell you about the time my wife was knocked to the ground by some "youths" at a mall and we went to the cops and nothing was ever done about it.  They told us to stay away from that mall.

I can tell you about the time I said to myself, "I guess I just need to get my wife and me a CWP" And you know what?  No one knocks us to the ground or holds us up with pipes anymore.

I have had cops tell me I should not carry a gun because that just will cause more trouble and I have a duty to flee in the event someone tries to rob me.  Job security?  Is that the reason?

I can tell you all about how my sisters family (with two small kids) was ripped out of their house in New Orleans by some real good cops after Katrina.  They had their guns taken away and were told they had to leave and could not come back untill the mayor said it was safe for them.  When they had tons of food and their house was high and dry and they were forced into a fucking camp.  Who gives anyone a right to tell a person they  have to leave their own home and be stripped of their guns like that?  Cops?

What about the fact you can order a pizza and dial 911 at the same time and the pizza is more likely to come first?

The sad truth is Cops #1 job is to create money for the city, state or county they work in by issuing fines and dragging people into court for small traffic or civil issues.

I've experienced my share. . . the way I see it, cops are just people. There are good people and bad people; good cops and bad cops.

Remember these people are people first, be it bad people or good people. Some people should never be cops, unfortunately some people that shouldn't be cops do become cops; however, they usually don't last very long. A bad person will make a bad police officer, fact of life.

Oh I agree, just the point I was trying to make. Myself, I've been appalled by the ones around here. Not all of them, but a good few. They sure are quick to bang on the shop door and ask me what my business being there at blah blah blah time is but I don't see a damn one of them around Rock Island or any of the other bad spots because they're being pussies.

raybeez

I believe that police officers need to act and present themselves WAY above par...

They are supposed to be setting an example to the community, and they're representing their town (city, etc.) that they work for.

Through my business, I've worked with many police departments/police officers. It's sad to say, but I've come to the conclusion that 75% of police officers are (or were before they became officers) bullies, know-it-alls, or bullies who know-it-all. There are a small minority of officers that I've met through my years that I would be honored to call them friend. But they are so outnumbered by the "other" not so good cops that it's sad. The good cops know who the bad cops are, but the good cops don't want to cause "waves" in their department so they say nothing and try to work around/avoid the bad cops.

After life as a military police officer, I was asked why I didn't become a civilian police officer. I simply state that I cannot lie very well...

Oh, and I've heard all the "the job is so dangerous, you don't know what we go through man" or "the pay doesn't come close to what we deserve" Here's an idea...if the job is that tough (bad), QUIT AND FIND ANOTHER JOB!  :Twocents:

You are correct the % for me is low. Problem is I have many friends and family in town here that have had the same things done to them. I see it usually everyday with other people I dont know. I wont even go into our Sherrif doing time a few years ago for ripping the city off or the crooked cop that had a theft ring going on in town. Or my buddy who ran a golf course here hosting the annual Law Enforement Charity fund raising golf game. With many many cops playing golf and drinking as much beer as they can on a nice afternoon (nothing wrong with that) and then getting in their cars sloshed and go home. Same guys that 3 nights before had blockades up all over town known as a DUI checkpoint. I see the turn the red lights on to get thru the stoplight intersection because we dont want to wait situation happen all the time.

Maybe its different in a big city verses my small town. I dont know. I've watched the COPS show before and all the BS they deal with. If they filmed here it would be a tv program of hassles and talking to fellow cops in the parking lot of a store.

As for myself I am 37 years old and have never had a speeding ticket and the only wreck I was in while driving a car was 21 years ago when I got rear ended. So I am not some person thats bitter and being "picked on" by the cops.

Since everyone is on a roll. Out of probably all the ticket's i ever got most were bullshit and I took them to court and won. I am glad I get free consultation  :icon_smile_cool: Once I was  jumping my car and I got a ticket for parking on the wrong side of the road to do so. I said that is the only way to do so. If I would have pulled beside it I would have blocked traffic and he said whatever you would have got a ticket for that too. Then he says I should feel lucky because I could have got an unattended vehicle ticket because I can't watch two vehicles at once. Then the bastard said " you forgot your licence" ....well i didn't ...he just never gave it back with the ticket. My wife came out and heard him and so she went to get my license and just as she reached for it he says this don't look like you and jerked it back before she could get it :flame: So I went to get it and he held on kinda tight and so I jerked it away from him and then he said I better settle down before I go to jail... Yeah I beat him in court on that shit. Later on I out ran the bastard when he was running radar but was standing there running radar with no car because his partner had someone pulled over down the street. I pulled up by him and revved to 5K and dropped the clutch and was gone. He stood there jumping up and down hollering STOP STOP! :icon_smile_big: I wouldn't do it now because eluding is a felony, then it was just a misdemeanor. The same cop took a guy to jail because someone backed into his car and the guy working at the hardware said I can't come out because I have customers and have no key to the store. He took him in for a failure to comply and then when they left the store and wouldn't wait till the owner showed up to cover the store and it got ramsacked before the owner got there  ::) This cop is just an asshole...yeah he still is working...harassing or what ever he does.

Keep in mind that the a-hole to good guy ratio is different in some departments than others.

For example, CMPD (charlotte-mecklenburg) are, on the whole, a pretty decent group of guys.  You get a few a-holes, but, on the whole, they are good guys who are competent, decent human beings.

NC Highway patrol officers, on the other hand, are, almost to a man, worthless SOBs who are probably the products of sweaty one-night unions between an inbred redneck and a 5 dollar crack whore.  They are powermad, douchebags with chips on their shoulders.

SC highway patrol is not much better.
I ain't got time for pain, the only pain I got time for is the pain i put on fools how don't know what time it is.

True. And by nature this line of work will attract people who are on power trips although I think they don't generally last very long in the profession if they have any real accountability. There are many other careers that attract power-trippers too though but few of them offer people the opportunity to crack their customers over the head with a stick when they get unruly. Still, if I had to deal with the scum of the world day in and day out I think I'd be tempted to crack some heads as well. And that's one reason why I don't ever want to be a cop. That said, I think it's a difficult task to be a good cop and it's easy and lazy to be a bad one, just like any other profession where a person has authority.

There is one tip I might share here from a friend of mine who's had a few run-ins with bad cops. He said if the stop starts going south with a local/city cop you are within your rights to request that a state cop or a supervising officer come to the scene and mediate. He's done that a few times with good results.
