My paint is beginning to crack!

A couple of days ago, I was washing my baby for the first time since we arrived here in Clovis, and I discovered a six inch long scattering of a crack in the paint   :icon_smile_dissapprove: :icon_smile_dissapprove: on the lower end of my left sail, about five inches or so from my gas cap!  :icon_smile_angry:

I have NO idea how it got there.

Looks as though I've got to start savin for that "Viper Silver" paint job.  I hope this dry high-plateau climate gives me a chance to stave off any more unpleasant "discoveries" until I can get enough $ saved.

slowly lift the fingers off the keyboard, and back away. someone that has a more valid opinion will chime in eventually. personally it sounds to me like a bad spot of pre-paint prep work.. it happens. even when a body looks flawless before paint. either a putty spot could have popped out and made it crack, the paint may not have laid down in that curved lower sail area by the gas cap, who knows.. i wouldn't let that be my excuse to get a whole new paint job, i'm sure it still looks sweet

Exactly what Travis said.
How old is the paint that is currently on the car?
Issues with paint delamination are usually associated with inadequate substrate preparation. In this case, something below the paint layer was trying to work it's way to the surface, be it a solvent or chemical of some kind. This is why I made it a policy to give my project cars a month or so after primer to let the fillers, primer, sealer, off-gas - before laying down that expensive paint!
As well, metal preperation is essential.
Which means it could be a number of reasons!

I'm leaning to the poor prepwork theory.

Consider this;  The gentleman in Tennessee that I bought it from, painted it in his garage with apparent poor prep work.  I mean really.  A moth landed on the paint just behind the gas cap and "fluttered" itself to a chemical death by drowning.  It was never taken out!  It looks like a dinosaur find that is unearthed.

I'm sure it is poor prepwork.

Yes.  I did.  Not long after I purchased my car from him, Danny built a new shop with, I belive, a paint booth.

I have the same problem with my 72 Charger, top of passenger fender, single stage paint job. When I wet sanded the car it solved the problem for a year or so. As mentioned about, I'm sure it's a result of poor prep before paint. When I did the car I was on a budget and was only intending it to be a driver. I got what I paid for.

Bradley, A good body guy should be able to fix that for you. I have had that happen before on a couple of my cars and the body guy I go to has been able to fix them without repainting the entire car. Good luck.

I'm not the expert, but if you have a vinyl top, the spot could be stripped and fixed and then have the 1/4 repainted and faded at the door jamb without painting the whole car.

Depending on the depth of the crack....the cause is usually the undercoat, and how thick it was applied...
Some thick surfacers will shrink over time, causing cracks in the top coat...
