Did they actually make a '70 charger RT/SE with a column shift option?  This charger on ebay has the fender tag decoded with a center armrest listed.  I just thought all RT's were consoles car??

Nope, not at all.  It's come up before but I'd even bet that a very significant number of RT (and other performance Mopars) came with column shift.  You wouldn't know it today though, it seems like a lot of them have magically sprouted consoles.  This is just one more reason why it isn't okay to make phony fender tags, it misleads people in general and not just on the faked car.

Sublime/Sixpack

True, not all R/T's came with the console.

Conversely, there were a whole bunch of 318 Chargers that DID get consoles.  It was an extra cost option for most Chrysler cars and in Charger the only limitation (in 69 anyway) was that it wasn't available with a 3 speed manual transmission or of course if you ordered the center armrest/buddy seat.
Now in 1st gen Chargers, the console was standard.

Console was only standard in the 66 Charger.  It was not available on a 67 with a three speed manual transmission.

Ghoste touched on it but to be clear...a column automatic was the standard set up for the R/T. Manual transmission and console were optional.

plenty of column shift R/T's made in 70. i've probably had 12 or so, and i think 5 of them came column shifter. not uncommon at all.

Column shift automatics just seem to come my way. I used to own a 68 Dart GTS 340 that was a bucket seat column shift car. I currently own a AAR Cuda with a bench seat column shift and also a 68 Charger R/T with a column shift and the center fold down arm rest.

My bad and even the Torqueflite could be had on the column for 67.

they would mix and match almost any option to make a sale. there is a guy here in town with a '70 hemi cuda, purple, butterscotch interior column shift.

Let's not forget that when these musclecars were new a lot of the target market was young, single, and male.  Most of them bought the cars to go a little quicker and primarily just to look cool, you couldn't look with your girl sitting way over on the far side of the car with that chastity wall of a console keeping you apart.  A column shift made sure you could keep an arm wrapped around that groovy chick while you were making the scene.
On a similar note, Jack Smith (product planner for the Road Runner) was relating a story when he was at the Mopar Nationals a few years back.  He said he had a large photo on the wall in his office of a young girl (she was a secretary at Plymouth's ad firm IIRC) and whenever someone came in and wanted to add fat to the Road Runner, his response was always the same; if you could tell him how adding that option to the car would help the primary Road Runner buyer pick up Miss Road Runner (his pet name for the girl in the photo because he never knew her real name) then he'd sign off on it.

In 1968, you could have had a column shift WITH a console. A plate covered the hole where the shifter would have went. :yesnod:

QuoteI don't know for sure about 69 , but according to my 68 service manual it was available to have a console and a column shift .

Here is a pic :

Its hard to read , but below the circled picture it says "with column shift" It appears to be a 4 speed top plate, with a block off plate instead of a boot.

Which would make sense for a 3 speed car; not for an automatic. In 68, there was no three speed floor shifter so I can see this for a manual car. If you ordered the console with an automatic, the shifter was moved to the floor.

Guys, I'm sorry but I'm really skeptical this was available for an automatic.

What was the option code for this?
How was it ordered?
How was it coded on a BS?
What is the part number for this plate?
What other factory documentation exists that shows you could get a column automatic with a block off plate in the console?
Any documented examples? Any window sticker or orginal documentation with the car?

Just askin'.....
