Can I justify buying BFG Mud-Terrain tires if I don't go off road much?

I'll admit it, the only real reason I want them on my Durango is for the cool factor. IMO they look bada$$ but for the life of me I can't really think of a real practical reason for getting them. I do go off road once in a while but overall we're probably talking 5% or less of the Durango's use.

I guess if they ride nice, last as long and are as quiet as an all terrain tire I could justify it but I have the feeling they don't. Anyone have a comparison for me?

It'd look something like this:

Had 33"s mudds on my F150 with a 3" lift. Liked them alot. I got about 30,000 miles out of them and 2 are still very legal. Probably would have been more if I rotated them when I should have. Have the all terrains now, both sets I bought dirt cheap brand new from people who purchased them and didnt fit there truck. I think they are a great tire.

I put the all terrains on wifeys jeep.

I'm on the same page !! My trucks never see rain , but I like the tough look . My Bronco show/ Offshore race boat tow Vehicle has Pro-comp 12.50 x 15 X-Terrains , great looking and Quiet . I just bough a set of Yokohama Geolanders , tougher looking than Pro-comp but yet Quieter . I bought them through Tirerack.com

I can't comment on the BFG Mud-Terrains but I had a set of 285/75R16s (33") BFG All-Terrain KOs on my 2500 Ram when I bought it and I will NEVER use another set of BFG tires EVER! :RantExplode: They had approximately 90% tread on them when I bought the truck and within 20K-25K miles they were SHOT. Those tires were WAAAY too loud for an A/T tire, they cupped within 1500-2000 miles after a rotation, they rode badly and the truck handled like a wet dishrag. :flame: I have since gotten a set of 33" Pro-Comp Mud-Terrains and I love them. The truck has a whole new look and it rides great. These mud tires are actually quieter than the BFG A/Ts. So far I've put about 30K miles on them and I've still got at least half the tread left. I've also heard great things about Toyo Open Country M/Ts but have yet to be able to afford a set.

All in all, mud tires will wear quicker than all terrain tires and your mileage will suffer. If you're not regularly going off road or driving on dirt or in snow I would say a good set of A/Ts would be a better choice. However, I love my Pro-Comps and wouldn't go back. :2thumbs: If you can get a set of mud-terrains for very close to or at the same price as the A/Ts and you really want them all I can say is give it a shot...

I loved my 35x12.5 mud TA's on my 77 Power Wagon. My wife and I used it as a daily driver, we
both drove it off road, she was more brave than most women  :2thumbs:  she is driving it across
the creek. I put a 5in lift on it as well. Had the truck for 15 years, put the tires on with in 1mo
of owning it, they were still great, but we only had  about 8k on the tires all together off roading, going
to the lumber stores, and driving to work ''not a long drive''. The truck drove very smooth, and no tire
noise at all to speak of, it was actually very quite as well.

I wish I had her back, I did all the work on it, it was all stock in 84 when I bought it, then 6mo
later I broke my neck, oh well..........

this is my truck its a little dirty but, My friends have all at one time had the bfgoodrich mud terrain. Yea they look cool but in my mind the best on and off road mud tire I have ever bought was these. They are mickey thompson baja MTZ's they go great in mud, snow and even on wet roads where most mud tires don't...  I paid $180 / tire that includes mounting and balancing, The size are 33x12.50/15

What you need to keep in mind is that not everyone enjoys loud obnoxious hillbilly screaming tires !! The Pro-comp X-terrains and Yokohama Geolanders are Tougher looking than almost any tire , their Radials , and their QUIET!!!!!!!.

They don't. Those big gaps between the treads make lots of noise and the tire compound makes them poor for street handling and even worse for wear. About the quietest tire I've used (that can still be considered "off road") is the Bridgestone Dueler A/T. It still has a fairly blocky tread, has about the best snow and rain handling, and lasts for a long time. I've had them on three trucks now. They definitely do NOT look as aggressive as a mud tire but you really don't want to drive a mud tire on the road. The constant drone gets old pretty quickly and the uneven wear makes it worse.

It's hard to look cool in a Durango any way... ;)

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Bfgoodrich mud terrains are a harder rubber. The mickey thompson's on my truck are really soft. If you rotate a mud tire every 3000 miles they don't make a whole lot of noise. They really start howling if you go over 3500 miles without rotating them, becuase they cup really easy. When they cup they wear off really fast, so you have to keep rotating them.. But some mud tires are directional and can not be rotated, they only function in one direction. They wont be as quiet as an all-terrain tire ever, no matter what you do.

I run B.F.Goodrich All-Terrain tires on my Dakota, and I love them. I use them on and off road. Great in the snow too. Mud terrain's won't be as good in rain and snow as all-terrains.  :Twocents:

Again , you can have that tough as nails look , wrap around tread , and WITHOUT going to A/T tire . I would never deal with loud Hillbilly sounding tires , do your homework !!!

I would look into Interco  truxas tires I ran them on my Jeep and loved them they handled very well and were quite I know people who have been running them on 1 ton doge deisel and are getting around 40k miles and that is flogging it everywhere he goes. I took off bfg at tires to run the Interco and am very glad I did.

Seems that he is doing his homework, by asking people on here. Does that mean that after doing his homework he will have the same answers on his paper as the rest of the people? NO. Which is why people are entitled to their own opinions on things.

As bad as it sounds check ebay...last year around christmas i bought some 35x12.50 procomp mud terrains for 160 a piece and the shipping was free. I put them on my good bronco not my beater so they are just for looks.   :coolgleamA: i have some pics but it says they are too big to post...

Bull, check craislist and your local want ads etc. Sometimes you can find some deals in there on new ones. That is where I found the deals I got on mine. The mud terrains are not noisier than the all terrains. This is my truck with the 33"s.

scroll down on this chart, it might help you out. I think a 31x10.5x16 would fit good under there. A buddy has a durango with them and no problems.

That generation Ford truck is by far the best looking truck they built....Next to the 49's  :yesnod: I'm looking at buying a 95 4x4 with the 460 engine to pull my trailer.

Ive got Dunlop Radial Mud Rovers on my 99 RAM. Made the truck look great and also softened the ride a bit. I'll get some pics up when i could, right now its down with the parents in Florida.
