flywheel question

I have a mid 80's  318 with a flywheel on it. I also have a good running  mid 80'S  360.    Will the flywheel off the 318  bolt up to the 360 crank or is the 360 a different animal altogether?

It will bolt up, But if memory serves me right the 360 is Externally balanced and the 318 is internally balanced.

I thought 68 was the last year that a 318 was internally balanced and it was a forged crank, 69 and up was cast and externally balanced.

All 318's were internally balanced whether the crank was cast or forged. This even includes the last Magnum version.

its not the flywheel that matters it is the torque converter, the 360 has it balance weight on the coverter.
all you need to make this swap is a converter for the 360  i just did this in my 87 ram (318 to 360)

     so  my clutch and flywheel should bolt up to the 360,  if I was putting an  automatic behind it I would have to get the correct  balanced converter??

The flywheel does matter because you don't have a torque converter with a manual tranny setup. There is a "flexplate" and a torque converter with the automatic but none of that applies to you. Balancing weights are welded on the flywheel with a manual tranny. You may be able to have the proper weights added by a machine shop but I have never tried to have that done.

Bottom line is the flywheel will bolt up to your 360 but it is not going to be balanced right.

thats the answer I was looking for. Probably my best bet is to get a salvage yard flywheel from an 80'S  360 truck engine. new ones are over $350 in MP.

The 318 flywheel can be modified to work on the 360 by drilling three shallow holes.
