4.7 engine durability????

I have a 2001 Dakota with the 4.7 engine with 190,000 miles. The engine has started doing strange things in the last few weeks, and is now making a rattling noise in the general area of the a/c compressor, but could be in the camshaft on the right bank. It completely quit on me in January, but the shop was able to get it going again after changing the oil??!!!

I am now looking for a new vehicle, but I have been reading a lot of horror stories about the 4.7 and problems with durability. I have been told it is a minor miracle that I got 190,000 miles without problems, since the 4.7 was designed to be a "throw away" engine not good for much more than 100,000 miles. I don't want to buy another 4.7 if it has proven to be a problem engine. Anybody have any experience or comments to share?

my 4.7 in my 01 Dakota has 155,000 on it and I have had zero problems with the motor! regular maintenance oil change, plugs, belt. I have not heard the 100,000 miles and thats it  :shruggy:  I have a few friends that are running the 4.7 and have had no issues with the engine!

I have never heard anything bad about the 4.7. In fact I have heard nothing but good things about the 4.7. The only thing I heard about was sludge. I was always told to keep the oil changed. I run full synthetic in our 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.7. One of my best friends has a 2002 Grand Cherokee with over 250,000 miles on his 4.7 engine. Guess it depends who you talk to.

Good information, I work at the 3.7 plant.  The 4.7 plant is next door, I will let them know about some of the feedback.

I have 98,000 miles on my 2002 4.7 Dakota Sport and it runs as well and as strong as the first day I got it, and have never had any problems with the motor, now the front end with the bad design of the Ball Joints are a different story.

Are any of you guys members of dakota-durango.com? That's a cool site too. You might raise your question over there and see what they have to say about it. I've gotten lots of good info on my 4.7 Durango and my 3.9 Dakota over there.

They are a little thirsty. But I knew that when I bought it.

Whats sad is our Jeep gets the best milage out of all our cars. My wifes Jeep averages 17 mpg, my Yukon averages 13 mpg and the Charger, well, enough said. I do not buy a vehicle for fuel economy.

I bought my 2000 dakota 4.7/5spd 4x4 with 120k on it, and it ran great! I have 135 on it now, and I beat the crap out of it and it just goes and goes.  Reg oil changes, a clutch fan, and a camshaft position sensor have been it for the engine.
