Should be "XS" for an R/T

dukeboy_318

REALLY?! sweet, then i just found a 69 Charget RT in the junkyard, looks to have a 4 barrel 383/727 still in there car with the 8.75 rear also still there. car is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to far gone, rails are junk, looks to have been wrecked, does have a decent deck lid though. grille is still in tact with motors for hideaways. ill post pics when i get home this evening

R/Ts are just 440s or Hemis, so if does have 383, original engine was removed.

BTW just sent an email to you
Venezuelan RT 74 400 4bbl, 727, 8.75 3.23 open. Now stroked with 440 crank and 3.55 SG. Here is the History and how is actually: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,7603.0/all.html

stopped by today, the owner of the yard wouldnt let me take a pic of the vin or write it down for what reason, he didnt say and i didnt wanna anger him since i did have to get permission to access this part of the yard due to the rare cars that are in there and i wanna be able to go back.  However i can confirm it does say XS29 on the dash and door tags as well a U in the vin as well.  i can also tell you it was built at lynch road, but thats all i can say as i promised not to post the entire vin and i keep my word! the numbers from the motor and trans DO NOT match the vin at all. No fender tags but under the grey paint there appears to be a blue color peeping through. ill post pics later this evening, gotta resize them first.  Stupid me forgot to check and see if it had a suregrip unit in it or not and for the gear ratio, may go back tommorrow.  I also found a mustang 428 cobra in there as well as a 396 camaro, several polaras, a 74 roadrunner, a 68 roadrunner(back half, front half cut off!) as well as a several other wrecked mopars. This one appears to had been side swiped and then hit either a guard rail or a fence.  Owner says he has about 450 cars to bring in over the next month, guess he bought a classical car junkyard from out of state and is bring those on to this 42 acre lot(were i found this charger is seperate from the main yard by some trees and an old fence, only ay in is through the gate he keeps locked hints why i cant post the whole vin or i would.)  :2thumbs:

not to question your charger year knowing skills, but if it has a U in the VIN, and a door tag on it, it has to be a 70, not a 69, but then again those cars were built at st louis, and you said it's a lynch road car, which throws me for a loop

A 68 or 69 wouldnt have a vin sticker on the door.

Maybe someone over the years dash and door swaped it?  :scratchchin:
68 Charger R/t white with black v/t and red tailstripe. 440 4 speed ,black interior
68 383 auto with a/c and power windows. Now 440 4 speed jj1 gold black interior .
My Charger is a hybrid car, it burns gas and rubber............

Troy

That's a 68 grill, rear valence, and tail panel. What is the 6th digit of the VIN (the year code)? For a 68 R/T the VIN should start with "XS29L8A" (for lynch road). There shouldn't be a 'U' any where on a 68 VIN. Is it possible that you found a 68 with a 70 dash? The body stampings won't match the VIN on a 68 either (they match the fender tag) and there probably shouldn't be a VIN on a 383 2-bbl engine or trans.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

ill have to run back and look, i had to memorize it since he was with me and wouldnt let me write it down for some reason. i just cant remember, but i will check the numbers in the core supports and trunk lip to see if they match :2thumbs:

okay, ust got back, the yard only 5 miles from my house, anythings possible i guess, anyway of telling for sure then, cause the fender tag is missing from the car, the casting numbers on the 383 indicate a 70 casting date if i remember right.  anyway this is how the vin reads (at least the first part) XS29U01A.......

my vin decoder says this  :shruggy:

model year 1970
car line and model Dodge - Charger R/T
price class- special
Engine 440 CID 1-4BBL HP 8 CYL
Assembly Plant- Lynch Road, MI

dukeboy_318

maybe a rebody or vin swap at some point :shruggy: :shruggy: the numbers on the dash and door are the same though

68-70  Chargers were only built at Hamtramck (B plant code) and St. Louis (G plant); not Lynch Road
70 Was St. Louis only.

No Lynch Road built second gen Chargers

Plus the plant code would be a letter, not a number. There's an extra digit in that VIN and a wrong letter. Better check again.

XS29U01A.......

Any pictures of the dash? The ignition is in the lower part of the dash in 68-69 but moved to the steering column in 1970. At least that way you'll know if they swapped the entire dash or just the VIN tag. The car definitely appears to be a 68 and I'd say it's a lot easier to move a dash than to weld on a 68 tail and swap fenders, hood, and front valence.

i did get more info from the owner of the yard, guess the car was involved in a police chase back in the 80s, wrecked the car, twisting the frame therefore totaly it.  Come to find out the car was stolen several months before the chase happened, so who knows what the deal is, i just think its neat to even still be in a junkyard in its condition, i figured it be better off crushed :-\  As for the vin, i did make a typo, XS29U01A is incorrect, should read XS29U0A

It's still a typo...no 70 Chargers made at Lynch Road (A) plant. Do you have a picture you can post.
