Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....

that was posted here awhile back from a different view as well. I believe a member here was actually present at that if I remember correctly.

BNSF has had a bad luck streak lately with wrecks like that. They just had another big one in Augusta KS last month. Its a miracle no one was killed in that one.

I got to see the download and pictures of the aftermath on the Augusta deal Those guys just plain werent paying attention. They blew by a red signal at 50mph. Dimmed their headlight at the oncoming train coming at them on the other main track and then slammed a loaded grain train into the stopped stack train.Thats the only thing that saved them was the stack train didnt put up much of a fight and scattered. Then it and their train derailed into the side of the oncoming train as it went by on the other main truck. If they had been faster or the oncoming train had been slower they probably would have killed that crew. Right before christmas at derby Kansas which isnt 15 miles away one of their coal trains hit our local. Crew  was running in notch 8 and never even attempted to slow down and hit the side of our local. If our local had been a tad slower it would have been a head one.

The above mentioned video I also got to see and hear details on a long time before it got out on the internet. The train you are riding in in the video is in the right 100%.  If you watch the signals they had good signals and was going to take the siding.  The crew in the oncoming train clearly did not get stopped. You see them go by the bond in the track and change the signal to RED for the train you are riding in. Thats when the Oh Shit factor starts. You are then along for a slow motion ride with an ending that hits with more force then you can imagine if you arent around railroads. Theres nothing you can do but ride it out or jump.

With all that being said the railroads and government have brought a lot of this one themselves but they wont admit it.  In the old days there were 5 crew members on a train. Now its down to 2.  Thats less people on trains to keep an eye on things. There are now 2 people doing the work of 5. Things can get busy up there and happen in a hurry. Add to it working 24 hours a day 7 days a week on call your sleep or lack of gets screwed up. You can go to work every 10 hours around the clock non stop for months at a time. You work a day and then a night. Sleep patterns are never there. You get all screwed up. You can fall asleep or your brain simply stops working.

Add to it inexperienced people working the railroad and you have all the ingrediants for disaster. In the old days you worked years as a brakeman before you could be a conductor. A fireman before an engineer. Now we have guys that hired out and 1 year later they are engineers.  They dont know what they are doing but they are in control or not in control of 10000tons of rolling train carrying chemicals of all kinds in tank cars and other items that are not good to have broke open thru your towns and coast to coast.

The railroads cut the crews down to lower expenses and show a higher profit. The government allowed them to do it. The railroads didnt hire anybody for  years and years and then suddenly in the mid 90's they realized their experienced work force was old and about to retire. Its gotten so bad around my railroad new people are training new people. These people will never learn railroading and gain experience.  Then they send new people out that have never worked that line. They do not know where they are going. They are supposed to request a "pilot" which is someone that will ride with them to show them the teritory. Railroads have forced employees to take trains without pilots and off they go down a track at 60mph in the dark not really knowing whats around the next curve or where they are at. I know, it happened to me 9 years ago when I had to work in another area.

Its no different where I am on CP. I hired out in the 90s as a conductor and after 3 trips to Montreal, 2 of which we didnt even make it they gave me the blessing. Here I am in another country with people speaking broken english and not a clue. Funny thing is as you mentioned there were times when I was with an extra engineer who hadnt a clue either. They use the downloads from that Augusta wreck all over the country now as an example in the safety meetings the railroads hold for the T&E guys. Funny how they preach wellness and safety and then make you work off your rest 10 days in a row. 2 days a week is enough for me anymore, I just assume collect my guarantee and stay home. Todd have you heard anything on the HR 2095 bill making progress?

Todd Wilson

I dont know what the 2095 is doing.  Its all a big mess and getting worse.

CSX is having there share of o-shits a couple of weeks ago at Avon yard in Indy. the carman with only a year or so on the job working a track with 109 cars in it asked the yard master of the hump crew was coming to get the track to switch was told yes so he let off the hand brakes as a favour when he was done working the cars.

Well Indy. sits on a hill you just don't let the brakes off and expect the cars to sit there, 10 Min's. later he asked the yardmaster if the yard crew got the cars when he was told "no"! well the cars are not here anymore? well after going several miles and going thought 3 absolute signals the dispatcher told a on coming train that a cut of runaway cars  were coming at them 10 sec. later it hit them at 29 mph derailing 40 plus cars in a general pile up.  69,700 gallons of soybean oil, 21,000 gallons of lubricating oil, 2,500 gallons of diesel fuel and 2,000 to 3,000 gallons of cutting oil, were spilled.

Took a hour to cut the engineer out of the lead loco. broke his pelvis in half and outher injuries.
life's to short have a blast before its gone.

At 42 seconds, the engineer bails from the train without the video camera, if you look close.
