G'day guys,

recently purchased some of those original type clamp rings which go on the radiator and associated hoses in the engine bay.

Problem......how the hell do you open them to use ? I heard there'
s a special set of pliers or something you can buy.

Any help/advice appreciated.

I hate those clamps!  But, I like my engine to look stock so I use 'em.  You can sometimes use a pair of pliers but the clamps tend to explode and fly across the room if nothings in the way.   :eek2:  Get the tool.   :yesnod:

They are called corbin clamps. This tool should do it.  http://www.sjdiscounttools.com/kdt429.html

Thanks very much for that.

I'll email them and see if they'll mail to me. I hope it's a case of one set of pliers does all sizes.

Yes the tool has a couple different size slots in it to do big and small clamps.

Thanks for the pictures.....so I'm assuming it is important to let them know just how big the ring is. I'm ordering online and have to get the right item.

Any local Sears store has them. They sell the style plier that have swival ends on them which makes using original style corbin clamps a breeze.

I bought a set of the type that look like slip joint pliers (like in the three pictures) from Sears a long time ago.  They probably came from somebody like Armstrong since Sears doens't make anything themselves.  If Sears doesn't have them, check with your local Mill Supply-----the place in your area that supplies tools and materials to industry.  Note that these may appear to be just slip joint pliers but look carefully at the pictures and you will see notches cut in the interior faces of the jaws.  These are what capture the ring clamp and keep it from flying away as you squeeze them shut.  The slip joint feature allows you to use them on little or big ring clamps.  Mine are chrome plated just like the ones posted.  I have never seen ones like shown being sold by KD tools or Snap-On.  They may be good but I just don't have any experience with them.

I bought mine from The Paddock a few years ago. Cost around 10 bucks as I recall, worth the money. Nothing worse than launching a clamp across the garage by using regular pliers and then trying to find the damm thing.

:iagree: 100%   I have both styles.    The other style works well on foreign car spring clamps with the flats...
