Photos from out on the road: in the '60s..

From the late 1950's through the early 1970s Martin C. Johnson took a number of road trips criss-crossing the country from his home in Suburban Chicago to both coasts and all points in between. For each trip he put together a slide show to document his travels. Judging from these shows he (and his wife who must be responsible for at least some of the photographs) was far more interested in the road itself than wherever his final destination might have been. For every photograph of Mount Rushmore or The Grand Canyon there were three or four shots of the empty (or not so empty) road taken through the windshield of the car. For every shot of friends and relatives visited there were two of the motels he stayed in on the way. In doing so Johnson has left behind an invaluable record of the golden age of auto travel- an era when the new interstate highway system had opened up the country but before the development it brought had homogenized it.

i recognise several pictures from san francisco and the S.F. Pennisula area..
this one's from North Beach.. notice the newspaper rack, used to be you just picked up your paper and went inside the store to pay your dime for the paper...

this one is from the great highway, where i was just yesterday and stopped  to snap some pics of a cherry '59 Chevy four door...

this is san francisco from the oakland bay bridge just as you get to angel island..

this is from the far right lane of the same bridge... possibly a different day or trip...

Those are some cool pics.

This one is about 15 miles from my house and I pass by it quite often. Once the snow melts I should take a picture to show how it has changed.

I've got a photo of me standing in the same spot (on the sidewalk) as the car.  The Cliff House - right?

I love all those old time photos. It was just another world then. I really like looking at the old picture books from my grandma and even stuff from when I was a kid as I remember some of that kind of travel and vehicles in the early 70's.

I think it would knock your socks off to see some of the old photos I've aquired in the past three Mos...
I need to get a good scanner and some software to enhance and restore them to a larger size and fix them up by eliminating the blemishes and such,.. if anyone has any recommendations as to which software/scanner is good for these applications, i'm all ears...
I plan on getting into this hobby and reposting them possibly on my own website for old car photos or someone elses if i find one...
in a very big way.  :yesnod:

Old pictures really intrigue me also.

My grandfather took tons of pictures and movie reels from the 60's through the late 80's until he passed. I have slowly been going through his collection and our family is really fortunate for what he did. The bad thing is grandpa spent so much time filming that pictures of him are somewhat rare.

Here is one of grandpa and me at a cousins wedding back in the late 70's. As usual he had his trusty camera and video recorder with him.

My Grandparents took a lot of pictures of their travels too, it would be nice to spend the time someday to collect & categorize them all. Most of them were scenic pics & of people, not many of cars & stuff. I talked my Mom into digging out a few of their Airstream trailer & various tow vehicles they used.

I posted the ones she found here; http://1970chargerregistry.com/70messageboard/viewtopic.php?t=4725
