are the exhaust valves to close the the wall on these 346 heads ? hense VALVE SHROUDING  . how can these be fixed ? i picked these 346 heads up for next to nothing  , so if i have to put a few $s in to them to get them right it wont be a big deal . im taking them to a machine shop to have them hot tanked and gone over .

what kind of cost should i expect to pay ?

thanks RANDY

Shrouding is when a valve is too close to the chamber wall causing alteration of air circulation in the cylinder, by the air/mixture bouncing off the side and disturbing flow. This can cause uneven burning, incomplete burning/mixing  etc. loss of power.  I've put 1.88 exhaust valves in a set of these heads before. If you feel they are close to the edge of the chamber, you can take a Dremel and sand paper roll and take 15 to 20 thousandths off the chamber next to the valve and gently blend it all in.Check clearance next to the gasket also.Remove the valves and keep them in order. Put masking or duct tape over everything around where you are going to grind so you wont have to worry about nicking valve seats etc. In a 440 or 400 block there should be no problem using big valves. In a 383 block however you would want to set the head on the  empty block and check the clearance by opening the valves. You can notch the top of the cylinder [ but make sure you stay above the ring area!] and gasket if necessary.I notched a block and only had to go down about .050" If you don't think you want to tackle this yourselfe any competent automotive  machine shop should be able to handle it , it's not as difficult as it seems.Good luck and have fun! Unfortunatly I had a break-in some years ago, and my car photos were mixed in with the valuables-camera etc. so all photos of my old cars lost forever. Kinda sucks. Ray
