Ya know, finding one of those truck bodies out here in the west is almost too easy. I personally know where there are a few of them, languishing in the back of old wrecking yards. And when I suggest that they might be wearing their original coats of paint...you could probably bank on that.
I took a trip to Montana on the weekend, to retrieve my "new" Sweptline shortbox pickup (actually called a "Utiline") at the border.
The border town in question, Sweetgrass, was extremely small. So small in fact, that they had but one gas station, a bar, a dog and a tumbleweed.
The dog was trying to mate with it.
Anyhow, while waiting for the shipper to arrive, my brother and I decided to tour the town. That took about a minute.
In the process, we discovered a psuedo-junkyard mostly comprised of old Army vehicles of all types.
Also in that yard were several of that style of Dodge Power Wagons, all 1968 vintage. All ex-utility trucks of some kind, all in original paint...all rust-free!
When I finally received my truck, I had to park it with it's kinfolk for a family gathering!
wow those cab's look pretty decent

I seem to recall a Plymouth magazine ad that had Petty's 66 or 67 Belvedere being towed to the tracik with a headline of "The only way you'll ever pass Richard Petty."  or words to that effect.  Don't remember what kind of truck was towing the car, but I believe the car was on a seperate trailer, not on the back of a truck.  Anybody have the ad?

Hey Magnumcharger, where did you get those other photos of the Petty Hauler?

I got those from either a Sweptline truck picture page, or from a recent thread on these trucks on Moparts.

My friends had just about talked me out of getting this money pit when I just got a call from the owner (a very nice person, by the way) and he's begging me to get this.  He will work out any deal he can with me as long as he knows that a Petty Superbird (clone or otherwise) goes on it.  He's really worried that someone will ruin it by cutting it up and putting a Chevy body on it or something.  He said he won't sell it if he thinks someone would do that.

He said this was sitting in an orange grove 70 miles from his shop.  He asked a buddy of his that moves big items like this to check it out.  He went out there took the rear axles out of the floaters (not sure if I got the terminology right) and hooked it up to a tow bar on his 1/2 ton truck.  I'm not sure how that would work on a 1,000 mile trip though.  But what an adventure it would be!

What's a boy to do?   :scratchchin:

if you can get it cheap enough might be worth it  but , it needs a ton of work .  :scratchchin:
I won't be wronged, I wont be Insulted and I wont be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to others, and I require the same from them.

Thats the big question, How do you get this thing home?.  Your average 1/2 ton is good for about 6-7000lbs,I'm sure it's a little heavier than that.

I'd call a delivery service like the one that shipped my truck from California. They would have an open trailer, which would easily carry that truck.
The company I used charged 80 cents per loaded mile. That's cheap.
