Torsion bar diameter

Measured the diameter of the torsion bars on my 71 Charger.
And came to it being 0,75 inches measured at the center of the bar with a caliper.
Thougt it should be 0,88 on a standard smallblock 318cid.
Either I am measuring at the wrong point or this does not make sense!  :icon_smile_question:
Anyway my Charger is fitted with a 440cid so I need to change them with 0,92" to get the car approved.
Anyone who can help me on this subject?

Hemidog

the 3rd gen boys will probably chime in on the facts, but do you think that the guys on "statens vegvesen" will measure the diameter on your torsion bars? i would go with the 0.92 or 0.96 eventually though.

oh, and post some pics of your ride!

greetings from Buskerud.

Afraid of that because I have a letter from AMCAR that states that to get approval for 440cid engine, the car must have 11" powerdrums or disc at front and 11" drums at rear, rear springs must have 6 leafs on right side and 5 1/2 leaf on left side and torsion bars must be O,92" diameter. Talked to the guys at "Statens Vegvesen" and they told me to prove that the Charger could be approved they would accept a letter from AMCAR that stated that. Of course the letter must be signed and stamped, they just love papers wich are stamped.  :P

Also have about 60 degrees of freeplay in the stearing gearbox to fix also ;)

Will take som pictures tomorrow after I have washed it, just collected it yesterday from the shipping company.

Thanks for your replies!  ;)
Had a look at a drawing of the front suspension and realized that I measured the rod going from the LCA and attached in the front of the car.
Not the torsion bar!  :brickwall:
Never worked on a car with torsion bars and rear leafsprings, stiff axle and this kind of suspension.
Only newer european cars with macpherson struts and indipendent rear suspension.
New experience.

Here are some pictures of my ride
