Any other options besides Laysons for a locking gas cap, for the 68?

had my first syphoning experience. :flame:

I don't think anyone else is reproducing them. Do you not like their caps or is it Layson's in general?

They're on eBay all the time. Going rate lately is anywhere from $125-$140.

Thanks,  I got one.

I had one that came with a 68 Charger that I got about 10 years ago. It started sticking a had a hard time getting to release one time at the pump. I made the mistake of throwing it away out of frustration.

Thanks again.

I have talked to Laysons twice in the last year about those locks, they have not had any in, and
have no date at all when more might come in. But when I talked to Dave at Laysons, he told
me to my face they are made in house... his employee's don't even know anything about that fact.

I am 40min from there show room, and bottom line I was told, no more of the locks in the works.

Still not sure where they were made   :shruggy:  Maybe Rick will come on and help us with this?
I trust him more than I trust Dave, goes back many years.

Hmmm, interesting. I should have stocked up I guess. I didn't realize they were out.

I bought two of Laysons locks in person at his show room. They are very very close to the original unit.
The only thing that I did not like ''besides the fact you can no longer get them'' is the key. It is a special
key that cannot be duplicated, so if you need another key '' they only come with two'' you are in trouble.
Now with an NOS unit, you can get a new key cut in a few minutes.

Dan, I talked to a locksmith about those keys and he told me they are some kind of Chinese specialty thing. I did ask if he could duplicate it with one of those "GAS" keys like the original and he said no but I didn't think to ask him if it could be duplicated with a regular double-sided key. Might be kind of scary to use if you can't get a copy made.

I was just hoping for a cheaper option like autozone or Schucks....silly me. Guess I'll just have to buy an attack dog or a .357 magnum...... :nana:

I'am glad I got one.  I think I paid $40 for it when it first was advertised.  Wish I had stocked up.  If the thing was made in China, I wonder if Mike at BEA would be interested in doing a reproduction of it.  He is reproducing about everything else for a 2nd gen Charger and I think virtually all of it comes from China via Peter Gee of PG Classics out of Canada  (Mike is the US distributor of Peter's stuff as I understand it).  Someone would have to send him one to copy.  I don't much want to part with mine since I only have the one.

It's easy to find 3rd gen locking caps maybe you can use that as an excuse to buy a 3rd gen and get rid of that measly 2nd gen.  :nana:  Where was the car parked when it was siphoned?

I would love to buy a 3rd gen.....my wife wouldn't be excited for a third car though.

The car was in my carport, which is under the structure of my house 75' off of a private road. They also tried to "jimmy" the lock on the trunk of the convertible...luckily they didn't try very hard.

This is the first problem in the 20 years we have lived here.

Mark...I might be a little late on this thread, but my way of thinking is if you put a locking cap on your car, they will probably do more damage to either the car or the gas tank to get the gas they want.....locks only keep honest people honest....theives will find another way around.....have ya heard of the old style springs that they had way back when? Kinda like a radiator hose spring, except smaller at one end....install in filler tube and theft hose is not able to go into the tank.

Sounds like you'd better get that thing locked up in storage somehow or enclose that carport area. The guy must not have been too bright if he's going past a $75 gas cap to syphon $30 worth of fuel.
