Is my 440 a police interceptor? What is this symbol on the pad?

I thought I knew about engine numbers and now I find this.

I brought home a 1970 super bee v-code car with a "non original 440" as the previous owner says.

Its near impossible to take a photo of the pad because the AC system is in the way.  I'm wondering if anyone here can confirm what the engine is.  The thing that has me confused is this symbol next to the D440 - it looks like a shield or something (this is why I am thinking police interceptor).

The pad looks like this:

         C
D440 <symbol>
8 22     B
         2

*The "C" is upside down

Thanks in advance everyone!  PS>  I realize after searching through this forum that I need to put my cars into the registry and share the info I have along with the various pieces in my collection.  There's a story I read where a guy was re-united with his long lost 440HP!  Too cool...

I think all the symbols indicate under size or over size bearings or bore.

Is there a legend out there explaining any symbols that were stamped?

Thanks!!!

A V code six pack Bee with A/C...Interesting.....I'd like to hear more about that.

'Police Interceptor' was a term used by Ford to designate their cop car engines which were a little different than production engines. Mopar didn't have a special build "police only" engine. The cop cars got the same 440-4bbl as the regular production cars.

From what you posted, it appears you have a 1968 (D series) 440 (CID) 350 horse engine block from a C body as you don't list HP being on the pad.

Its the symbol that puzzles me.  I wish I could take a picture...

Expecting to sound a little silly, the symbol kinda looks like the batman symbol - like a cross sorta.  OK, I just read what I typed and it does sound stupid.  But its what it is!

69Coronet, my goof.  I didn't say that the AC was on the engine only - not the car.

So has anyone seen symbols used on 67 440 engines built for the 68 model year?

Do you mean like a Maltese cross?

It means the crank is .001 undersized

has anyone ever seen that cross stamped on a transmission before? I have one out back with that stamped on it
Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....

Hi all, I am new to this forum and the Mopar world.  I just picked up a 440 that has this Symbol also.  Can you tell me more about it?  Why would the crank bee undersized?  Does this mean anything if I have the block bored out, as far as for the machinist of for my new parts afterwards?

Thanks,

My engine looks just like that but says E440HP. What does that mean if the engine was made 1/20/1977?

 :icon_smile_big: I'm going to get rid of the engine soon so I don't give a flip. Forged Cranks are better.

An E before the displacement is the year code for 1969, an E after the displacement means it has a cast crank.

E440= '69 440

J440E= '73 440 with cast crank
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Yes. Tenton was where the engines were assembled.
