can the driprail molding on a 71-74 charger be removed without being damaged?  Ive pulled on it a little but I'm afraid I'm going to break it and not be able to find a replacement...

some VERY tricky... but is posible. HARD TO FIND REPLACEMENT. When I made my body job i didn't have the courage to remove it so just masked and made the job.

well the car used to have a half-top, and i suspect there rust forming under the driprail moldings and on the windsheild, so i have to remove it to get at it...

Easy . Just wrap a " Church Key " with some tape to prevent scratching and gently work moulding loose.

whats a church key?  Is it a common practice to just run without the molding? Hows that look?

A " Church Key " is the old fashioned bottle opener . You could run without the mouldings but I think it looks rough and unfinished. They really aren't that difficult to R & R . Just take your time .

My advice is to get several church keys and head to a friendly junkyard that will let you experiment on some cars that they are going to crush anyway.  Go ahead and try removing the driprail.  The way to do it is to start at one end.  You grap the driprail on the bottom side with the "tongue" of the church key and rotate upward.  If it won't budge, go to the other end.  Do not start in the middle.  Once I got the hang of it, removing the driprail trim was a snap.  Once you get out there, you will see how to do it right off.  I wish I had a picture of a church key but it is the old fashioned type of coke bottle opener.  Maybe somebody on here has a picture of one.  Mine is buried out in the garage somewhere.  I said to take several since the little "tongue" will mess up after a while or get bent.  I don't know if paint and body shops have a correct tool for this or not.  Surely they do.
