How do you install a 73 front bumper?

The 73 body service manual just shows an illustration of where the brackets mount. But I don't see what the brackets mount to on the body. What order should I go in to make it easy? I've got the large Y-frame brackets on and that's all I can figure out. Bumper fillers will be left out.

Assuming the '73 goes together the same as my '71, just bolt the brackets to the bumper then slip everything in as a unit and bolt the brackets to the sides of the front part of the sub-frame. On the '71 there are two heavy duty round wire brackets that attach to the top of the front fenders. You might find it easier with the front valance taken off.

:iagree:  Its much easier to install as an assembly.  Sounds like you were trying to put things together on the car and that way doesnt work very well.

the easier and correct way I have found to fit is:

-keeping the front valence in place. The very front bolts are not easy to bolt with bumper on place.
-beams out of the place, to be able to fit the diagonal braces located between fender and lower area of bumper above the front parking light.
-everything as one assembly, including OUTER Y brackets. Inners are bigger and won't fit between valence and frame rail. In fact, outer Y brackets slide over the inner bracket. To make that you fit the bumper assembly from the front and the inner Y  brackets from inside the wheel well to front.

That's the way I think was made on Factory. Problem with this. need two or three guys to make it on that way.

The other way what allows you to make it allmost by yourself is like I told you on email, attach all Y brackets to frame rail ( not tight ) and then fit over the complete bumper assembly. There is room to get acces to carriage bolts with wrench below the bumper. Without beams probably is posible get access to outer carriage bolts with rachet and extension throught a hole provision on lower reinforcement. Inners are easier. Dunno if you are mouting back the bumper guards or not but that's not a deal

If you do it with the valance off, you can't scrape the valance with the bracket as I did.

I'm going to try it this weekend provided I can figure out the sizes of all the bolts I need. Just about every bolt I took off originally for the bumper broke in pieces. I've got the Y-braces on and the valence on already. I will be leaving the bumper guards off, because they're in no shape to go on. I don't know if I'll be successful getting it on but I'm going to try and I may have someone to help but if not I'll wait another weekend to try it again.

Get extra bumper bolts and file the shoulders on the carriage bolts round. Then you can put them in the bumper guard holes and no one will ever know they're not holding the bumper on. That's what I did when I had a '73 rear bumper on my '71 for a few years.
