I'm looking for some good 6x9s that will replace my old ones but I don't want an to put in an amplifier. Any suggestions.
What wattage does the stock radio push? like 25watts?

Nacho-RT74

ha!, radio puts from 3 to 5 watts depending of what radio you have. 5 watts is the multiplexer one.

You can put any speaker wattage. What I can't remember is if original speakers are 4 or 8 ohms. Normally auto speakers are 4 ohms, but dunno if stock ones

To help with low wattage head units you should try to find speakers with a High Sensitivity rating.

They require less power to make sound.

Here is an article about it.

http://www.jsdsound.com/sensitivity.htm

Put as Nacho said any speaker will work.

Nacho-RT74

everything is in relationship the amp and volume you will play. Since we are talking about stock Radio and we don't have the exact specs whe can't say what would it be the best speaker.

there is not a perfect speaker on market to match with stock Radio. any speaker you mount won't fill the requirements and will distortion on amp before arrives to speaker

I agree there isnt a perfect match.

However given the low wattage output,

If you have a choice between a High Sensitivity speaker and a low one.

The High Sensitivity is the better one to pick.

Essentially you could get double the volume for free.

Nacho-RT74

yeah that's pure theory LOL.

Next step is find a matching speaker to directly bolt on on package tray ( specially driver side ) and dash AND BEING High sensivity LOL.

The problem with Sound is there is lot of unknowledgement about relationship between theory concept and the real world. PPl, including those what supposelly knows his bussines have debates about it, and frequently forgett about dB value is a relative value and not an absolute value. I am supposelly a sound tech and still can't talk with property about that, because never is enough time to play and experiment with that on the field.

beside that never is the same talk about electrical dB and acoustic dB and blah blah... LOL

I simply went and got a NOS speaker for rear and rebuilt the front one.

Talking about watts on stock Radio... you can change the transistors for a powerfull ones ;)

driver side rear speaker is not 6x9, is 5x8, and aftermarket ones mounting holes doesn't match with rear tray holes. No prob about the passeneger side 6x9

If one speaker is rated at 87 db at One watt one meter.

And another is rated at 90 db at one watt one meter.

And given that it takes double the power to increase 3 db........

Its a more logical choice to get a speaker with a higher sensitivity.

And yes this goes far beyond what most people need to know.

But I tend to over engineer everything.

Which would also explain the 10" Solo baric subs in undersize boxes hidden in my trunk.

And the 2000 Watt Amp needed to power them.

Try maybe 5 watts.

We used to think we had it made if we had a sparkomatic 20 watt power booster bolted under the dash next to our FM converter along with a 8 track deck stuck in the glove box.

The stock speakers were 8 ohms.  Modern speakers are almost always 4 ohms.  They will work but will draw twice the amps putting strain on the output transistors.  Speakers with 8 ohm voice coils are available.  Some threads on here list a couple of places that sell them.  I have seen advertised outfits now that replace the guts of our stock radios with new electronics allowing you to get fm as well as plug in a MP3 player.  Cost was something like $400.  Externally, the radio appears stock.  I would bet those use 4 ohm voice coil speakers.  Note that the 4 or 8 ohms is not dc resistance.  It's the resistance of the voice coil at 1000 hertz.

Don't put 4 ohm speakers on or it will fry your radio. One of my radios fried after five minutes when I installed a 4 ohm radioshack speaker in the back. If you need a new one go to the junkyard and look for a late 80's dodge. I found  in a 89 diplomat. Most had 8 ohm 6x9 speakers and are marked. If not you can check with a dc ohmmeter and it should read 7.4 ohms. It seems most 80's chryslers were 4 ohm and the dodges were 8 ohms, but I found a 8 ohm 5x7 speaker for my charger today in a 89 town and country wagon. So I guess it depends on the radio. You can also get new 8 ohm speakers from turnswitch.com.

:brickwall: What the hell? Why would they do that? I'm sure i'll be able to find the speaker sampler pack.
My "Chevy-lovin" friends were laughing their @sses off at all the sh!t that didn't match on old mopars. Well, atleast they were consitent at being inconsistent.
I'm probly gonna just start fresh anyway,with new everything. I just didn't want to cut and drill too much on the car but looks like i'll have too.

Nacho-RT74

maybe they did that because on stereos setups, the front speaker is also left chanel, so to match "power" and frequency range, two medium size speakers ( rear 5x8 and front 4x10 ) would meet same qualities than one 6x9.

that is just a theory I have, because is a fact 2 speakers makes same sound than one speaker 1.4 times bigger... for example 2 10" would cover same frequency range than one 14" ( althought 14" are not a production size )

That could it be logic since if we think on area:

5x8=40
4x10=40

6x9=54

54/40=1.35

of course I'm talking about square measures, not circle/oval, but more less!!!, plus the relationship is more toward to diameter because the wave lenght and not area, probably making the right calculation with circle formula relationship will be MORE CLOSER.
