A new TTi exhaust system is on its' way, along with a pair of tips from Accurate.  I feel that since I am going this far, I might as well remove the exhaust maifolds and coat them (I would have liked to send them out for ceramic coating but the Eastwood's product will do for now http://www.eastwoodco.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=262&itemType=PRODUCT&RS=1&keyword=manifold) and my reason for posting this topic was I was curious as to....

What type or how many heat shields belong on a '69 Charger 440 Magnum to protect the spark plug and/or the spark plug wires from melting?

I am talking about the small aluminium heat shileds that protect some (not sure if it is for all) of the spark plug(s) and the spark plug(s) wire(s).

Am I correct in thinking that when it comes time to re-install the exhaust manifolds, that would be the time to install the heat shields as some of the mounting hardware would be used to secure the heat shields?

Where can I get a complete set of these heat shields?

Thanks in advance!

If you are looking for spark plug shields like the original they are made of steel not aluminum. You can get the factory wire brackets also to keep the wires in place.

I got both of these sets from Mega Parts. Talk to Jamie at 608-452-2045...he will treat you fair.

I have some pics on my computer at home of these items if you want me ot post them.

Bill Allphin http://www.amhightechauto.com/ has the shields and a lot of other detail items on his site.  I have purchased a lot of stuff him for my 69

For the exh heat shields (there are 2 one double hump on the drivers side and 1 single on the pass side) just click on the electrical section and then the ignition section for the brackets......

Thanks.

personally i would leave the spark plug heat sheilds off. there is 2 reasons why i would.

1) you have to take 2 of the head bolts out to get the heat sheilds mounted. the head bolts hold them in place and i'm not a big fan of disturbing head bolts once they are in place not to mention they are on the rear of the engine and are hard to retorque.

2) with the heat sheilds in place there really isn't enough room to get a spark plug socket between the heat sheild and spark plug and i have broken a few spark plugs trying to get them tighten or taken out.

i have actually took a pair of tin snips and cut those things off just so i could get to the plugs easier. the plug wires run on the bottom side of the engine to the spark plugs and with a 90* boot on the end of the plug wires they will not touch.
