HEMI Daytona shift knobs?

So, this pertains to the Daytona at work...

The owner told me that someone had written him an email, telling him that HEMI cars came with the 66=68 auto transmission shift knob.  He then told me that it was Wayne Perkins who wrote it.  That made me pause.  Now, the only HEMI car I've ridden in is Terry Roelofs' car, and honestly I can't remember what it had, but I'm shading towards the early style...  That car had an older restoration, though.

Anyone else able to back Wayne up?  I'm not calling him out, but does anyone else recall seeing the fluted chrome knobs in Daytonas?

I think you will find the owner has been misinformed. No reason to single out one application when everything else for the model year/line  is the same. :Twocents:

I personally have seen four hemi-autos and they all had the chrome/fluted knob. I can recall a pic of one with the wood knob(besides the one at your work) but I can't seem to remember where, sorry. Does anybody know if  the Kelly hemi-auto from Canada has the chrome/fluted knob?

i have always wondered about that  :scratchchin: also but I'm sure it is every Daytona i have seen! has had a 68 shift knob .........  but if they were just left overs how come C500s never got any  :scratchchin: ..................... :popcrn:

I think if you check around, you'll find a whole lot of chrome shift knobs on original Daytonas.  Why?  I really don't know, but it was probably a vendor supply issue.  AFAIK the '69 shift knob was "supposed" to be woodgrain, but I've probably seen as many chrome ones as I have woodgrain - especially on later-built cars like Daytonas were.  If you look at the '69 Dealer Data book, it shows a woodgrain knob - and that book was published before the '69s ever hit the showroom.

Side note here, there are plenty of Charger 500's that have the chrome shift knobs as well. If I remember right Dave Jones old HEMI Daytona had the chrome shifter knob as well. I'll see how many Charger 500's I can confirm as having the chrome knob but its not a small numbers.

Even late cars had chrome shift knobs that weren't Daytona's or 500's. My old SE Charger with the sunroof had a chrome shifter knob on it when new, and it was built in may of 69 as well.

Latest pics have the woodgrain. But since it's a restored car it may have been changed.

All four of the automatic 1969 Chargers (2 with 383s, 1 440 R/T, 1 440 Daytona) that I have owned have had the chrome knob instead of woodgrain...

Can't find a photo showing the inside of Dave Jones old HEMI Daytona just yet. I'm sure I will though.

Side note, have located photo's of 5 unrestored Charger 500's that are AT console cars, and so far it goes like this 3 have the Chrome shift knobs, 2 have the wood grain shift knobs.

Here is a picture of the shifter in my first Charger, a 1969 Charger base model with a 383... unless it was really a Hemi Daytona!  :scratchchin:

The picture was taken in 1973...

pretty wild stuff.

"Hey Vern, what we gonna do with these here 10 pallets of old shift knobs?"

69_500

Side note here Doug, in a few weekend I plan on viewing yet another unrestored HEMI 500 that isn't too far away. Its an AT car, and one of the press release cars. I'll see what shifter knob it has on it.

The road test car was the one showing the smaller radiator .I believe it showed the correct knob as my survivor daytona .I think if the woodgrain was used it was because of line worker conditions using a substitude or surplus part

If you mean the automatic shifter console knob, I've only seen chrome 1968 version on a Daytona.

GO SELL CRAZY SOMEWHERE ELSE WE ARE ALL STOCKED UP HERE

69_500

I think you have something confused there Dave. The AT HEMI 500 they used in the testing had the 26" radiator as well. 054 to be exact. I think that the magazine showing the smaller radiator was on a Daytona.

69_500

Side note here, back to origional topic. I have a photo of the interior of the HEMI Daytona that Dave Jones owned for years, and it had a chrome shifter knob on it before Dave Jones bought the car. However I have another photo of the car while Dave owned it, and it has a wood knob on it. I think the wood knob was put on the car shortly after the high dollar lacquer paint job in the 80's.

the 6k mile dressler motors car has a chrome knob...updating thread

Mopurr

Our Daytona has the chrome knob....not a hemi though.

Our 69 Charger has the Chrome knob but it is an Aug. 6 1968 build date though but the best I remember it seems like all the daytonas that I have paid attention to have had Chrome knobs.

69_500

3Daytona's green Daytona also has the chrome shifter knob on it. So add another one that isn't a HEMI but has the chrome knob.

Had this saved on the computer if this archive picture is accurate checkout the shift knobs left picture a 68 with woodgrain shifter knob. It also has the plastic combline instrument panel texture and center dash medallion between tach and speedo 1968 vintage :shruggy: Picture on right 69 vintage head rests and chrome knob

Yes but I think you know those press photos can hardly be called accurate.  There would be no denying they were looking at the next years options well ahead.

On another side note my old winger not only had the 68 shift knob it had the 68 top plate.Original? probably not....
