How are you guys mounting your 6x9 speakers in the rear? I want to mount a 6x9 in the driver's side and leave the defroster on the passenger's side.

The opening is for a 5x7, not a 6x9.

Remove the rear seat and the package tray to get easiest access.

I know the hole is for a 5x7, but I've heard of people mounting 6x9's in their place. I was curious how they did it?

You can cut the metal to 6 X 9 size.

Or you can mount the speaker under the hole.

Ideally you would forget about that and put speakers in the front doors.

Audio wise thats the best sound.

If has to be the back and has to be just the drivers side.

I would buy a componet setup put one of the Mid/lows in the hole and dont use the other.

Then surface mount the mid/hi speaker on the left and right sides of the tray.

That way you will actually have some sort of imaging.

Something like this............

I mounted mine under the tray using 3 of the 4 holes for the screws IIRC....

I also have a rear defroster.  I mounted the motor on the drivers side using an existing hole for the air intake, turned the plenum around & used a longer piece of hose to connect the motor to the plenum

you can get spacers to set the speaker on smaller hole separated from tray and fill the gap with try with "something" to keep the bafle function and save from cancelling frequencies.

won't be a perfect system ( speaking of audio tech ) since you will get a horn effect, incrreasing mid frequencies, but will work to keep safe the cone and suspension from meet the tray.

Thanks guys, I'm going to try Just 6T9_CHGR's method. I am mounting a $5 8 ohm speaker from a diplomat and using the original radio so the sound won't be perfect anyway.

Edit: Found the right 5x7 speaker in a 89 T & C wagon.
