cam assembly lube

Getting new cam and lifter kit from summit, in the description it says it doesn't come with assembly lube. What do you guys recommend I get for assembly lube. Thanks Alan

If i were you i would just get a bottle of comp cam lube, or i bought this green stuff that is real thick at a local auto parts store. The reason it is real thick is so it doesnt run off the lobes of the cam if your not going to start it right away..

Use moly paste on the lifter faces only....not on the sides of the lifter. Comp Cams also sells a liquid additive that you add to the oil during the breakin. You should run this additive continuosly due to the low zn/phos concentrations in todays junk oil formulations. A descent oil to use is Valvoline Racing VR1 20/50

i have a really stupid question .

when is the cam lude applied ? before instaling in the motor or after its in syaled and before final seating into the cam bearings ?

Thanks again Ron, you like the valvoline VR1 20-50 and the comp additive. I thought you were a shell Rotella 15-40 guy ? I was going to run the rotella 15-40 and the comp additive, I like valvoline also so if you think the VR1 20-50 is better I'll run that with the comp additive Also after breaking the cam in do you change the oil again right after break in or drive the car for a few miles then change the oil again

I know they lowered the zinc in the rotella oil but I think its still higher than most off the shelf oils out there. I was still going to use an additive with the rotella 15-40   Alan

Supposing your cam bearing are in , you slide the cam in place lube up only the bottom of the lifter's and set them in the hole. Usually if i have some left over i squeeze the rest of it on the cam lobes.

The Rotella will work with the Comp additive. The VR-1 is just slightly better in terms of EP additives but either will work and both need the additional boost of an EP additive (EOS/Comp cams breakin lube)

Ron, do I need to change the oil right after cam break in, and then change the oil at regular intervals like I use to. If so I would use the Rotella 15-40 and the additive to break in the cam because the Rotella is less $$$

Alan,

Yep, change the oil/filter right after the breakin...this will purge the moly lube paste and any small metal particles that are floating around in the oil from the cam/lifter wear in. Use the Napa Gold oil filters...no Fram junk.

I would change it again at 500 miles....then normal intervals after that.
