quick question:  on my 69 charger r/t the front parking lights in the valance turn off when i turn on the headlights, and i thought that was a 68 thing.  My buddies 2 69's stay on with the headlights on, i'm wondering if i have a 68 headlight switch?????  they do come on when the switch is in the parking light position..... :eek2: :brickwall: :scratchchin: :shruggy:

yeah on '69s they should stay on with the lights...

so then why aren't mine coming on with the lights?  does anyone know if maybe the 68 headlight switch is different???? :brickwall:

think the switch  is the same  :scratchchin: its just the harness is different in a 68  .....................:popcrn:

That would be impossible, it's an original r/t, 50000mi car with the correct harness.  I just parted out a 68, and the whole dash harness is hard wired into the fuse panel in the glove box, and the 68 fuse panel is different.  So either the switch is different or maybe there is a internal problem with the switch in the car.???:scratchchin:  :eek2:

I'm 110% the dash, wiring ect is original, i'm wondering if maybe the switch (headlight) was changed at one time with a 68 switch???  or maybe if anyone else had a problem with the headlight switch itself????? :eek2:

:scratchchin:  yeah but I'm pretty sure the headlight switches are the same 68/69  :shruggy::scratchchin: i don't have the wiring diagrams to look at the switch wiring 68 to 69 ,   right now  :shruggy: might be a internal switch fault like you say  :scratchchin:  .................. :popcrn:

Back N Black

The Forward headlight harness is different,The 68 has extra connections for the side marker lights and it wired different so that the running lights turn off when the headlights come on. Have a look and see if it has the sockets for the 68 side maker lights, maybe taped up somewhere.

Nacho-RT74

the OFF status on parking lights on 68 comes more from switch than harness... althought wiring would it be diff because sidemarkers and stuff, you can just TURN THEM OFF by the switch.

So I could say, YES probably you have 68 switch

Thats what I'm thinking.  I guess i'll try look for the difference in the switches, i have a 68 dash cluster (spare).   :scratchchin: :popcrn:

You know guys I can't talk about 2nd gens with same property I think am able about 3rd gens, but being logical and with some knowledgment about electrics that's my conclusion.

PROBABLY switches are phisically the same since both feed parkings/sidemarkes ( on each case ) what does not mean they work the same. Diff should it be internally

Parkings on 68 MAYBE are being feeding from same source feeds the position rear lamps and thats why they keep on when you turn on the beams, cutting just the front parking signal. Probably the have its own source coming from switch.

I think you can make work the 68 switch on a 69, just splicing the front parking lights wire from rear lights terminal at switch itself

Need to check both wirings to analize! will do later.

Ok was analizing and definitelly SWITCH does look to be the same... just use a JUMPER to keep the parking lights work spliced from rear parking lights, so there is not a 69 switch, is a 68 switch JUMPED on switch plug to make it work on 69s

they didn't make a 69 switch as I thought, they just modify 68 wiring at plug to keep them working when beams on!

There is another SUBSTANCIAL differences too but this is the one that keeps front parkings on.

i don't think i understand you correctly, i have a 69 charger, and the lights should come on with headlights, but they do not.  Are you saying the switch is the same?????  I don't get it, what is the difference between the 68 (where the lights go off when headlights are ON) and the 69 (where parking lights stay on with headlights ON)>?????  :eek2: i'm confused???? :brickwall:

Nacho-RT74

I am too LOL... still checking

do you have a gray wire on your light switch plug ?

Nacho-RT74

yea, definitelly, they didn't make a REAL 69 switch, they simply spliced the rear and sidemarkers signal output from switch in to the prong that would feed the front signals on 68, making on both positions both prongs being feeded. They made that with a JUMPER on exactly way I was suggesting you to make it work.

So when you put the beams ON on switch, the prong on 68 what feeds the front parkings is cut. On 69 this prong IS STILL BEING CUT internally, but the jumper on plug keeps feeding extrenally the wire to front parking lights, making this internal cut function UNUSEFULL.

Analized all the wiring and of course there are other differences throught the wiring. INCLUDING COLORS. For example the yellow traced wire show on this diagram section on 68 is eliminated, moving one of the black wires to this prong. Then the jumper restore the black wire splice showed on 68 section. The black splice is to feed the dimmer switch on both years and then from there the front parking lights with a yellow traced black wire on 69s underdash and then black traced yellow on engine bay. On 68 with a dark green traced wire spliced from dimmer switch input feeds the front sidemarkers

i see, so i must have a bad connection somewhere, quite possibly the jumper; since i know the wireing is 69 (this i'm 110% sure about since it's an original untouched car).  the parking lights work when the switch is on park  I'll have to do some homework, thanks for your help. :2thumbs:

So, is the 68 wiring harness different from the 69 or can you install a 68 in a 69 without any modifications?

Nacho-RT74

needs mods... not a big deal though! just pay attention about the changes... at least on this stuff about lighning... dunno really about the rest... would need to get into further

69chargeryeehaa states fuse block panel is totally diff. Diagram shows some differences but dunno if really to worry. Never have had those in my hands to really know.
