A guy I work with has one.  I don't think they're any worse or better than any other convertible the same age when it comes to water leaks.

It's not a midlife crisis, it's my second adolescence.

they do not leak unless you have a hole in one.

and how cheap is pretty cheap?  resale on them in good condition is $3,300.00.  I got mine for $1,500.00 and it needed a new top, well, still does hehe.

Dang! I thought I was pretty knowledgeable about vehicles but I didn't even know those existed. :shruggy:

So if it was this guys project what is wrong with it? Paint, mechanicals, both or ?

If it is decent for $1,300 it should already be in your driveway if you really want it. Let's face it, you can't really buy much for that price anymore that doesn't need something.  My mom bought a red 1989 Dakota Sport 4 x 4(non convertible) new and I got to drive it for a while back in high school. It was gutless with the 3.9 V6 and the syncros went out in the tranny at 6,000 miles. It was a cool looking truck with the roll bar and lights though...plus the girls liked it.  ;)

That means you didn't know about the Shelby versions, either. :icon_smile_big:

*EDIT* I was trying to find a pic of a Shelby convert (which was probably only a sticker kit & wheels), but so far no luck...I did find a fan site, though;

Looks like the production total was a little contradicting on that site versus what an "official letter" states;

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

I need to buy a lotto ticket! I read this post earlier. About an hour later I took a trip up to the store and there was a Dakota convertible at the stop light!! It was maroon with a white top. What kind of luck is that?? I think it's only the second time I have ever seen one in person. I always thought it was something the owner had chopped up themselves. I didn't know it was a factory built vehicle.

mine is a black, with black top, and maroon interior 4x2, 3.9 V6 TBI with 5 speed NV1500 tranny and 3.55 gears in an 8 1/4 rearend (open).

My Dad had one which was given to me when he passed away. Very Underpowered V-6 with 4 wheel drive, only 9000 miles, never leaked but it's a convertible made to be stored inside imo. If you can get one for $1300 and you need a truck buy it. I have mine stored and insured cheap with classic insurance.

many do not.  i always get asked how I (personally) converted the truck to a 'vert.  I tell them Dodge made these and the people are in disbelief.  It sure is a fun truck to have though, and yes, that V6 is a turd, but it gets 25-27mpg on the highway.

Afflyer

My first truck was an '88 Dakota.   I kicked myself in the arse after I bought it, because the 'vert came out just a few months after I bought mine!   I really loved that 'vert version!   Would have been really cool to drive that convertable all over Europe like I did with the '88 Dakota when I was stationed in Holland. It REALLY turned the local's heads back then.   :devil:
