I bought a 5 string about 2 years ago, but only lately been really getting into it. Taking some lessons and finally starting to pick up on the finger work, to where its starting to sound like something (bluegrass style mostly) Just curious...anyone else play?  :musik010:

Always thought it would be great to learn and scare the hell out of hikers in the mountains around here by playing dueling banjos off in the distance.  :D

I've played alot of different stringed fiddles but haven't had a chance to play a banjo yet.   Sounds like fun though!

Yea, me too, it has a special sound all its own, kind of like its a little out of tune on purpose with that unique hollow twang, I love that sound!! Anyway, so far Ive learned a bit of Cripple Creek (an old Earl Scruggs tune), Dixie, and of course (the intro to Dueling Banjos-thats kind of like the Stariway to Heaven for banjo players Id guess ha ha) Its turning into a lot of fun...guess now Ill have to buy an old muscle car have a mess of barefoot kids and move to the mountains, oh wait...Ive already done those things.. :icon_smile_big:

I never played them, but I built quite a few. A few years back my buddy met this former partner of the Ome banjo company. This dude bailed back in the 70's, and when he left he took what he felt was his share of banjo parts, tools, wood, etc. He had it sitting in the basement of his house all those years, so we bought it all. I built around 40, some almost done, some raw. It was lots of fun. I had a beautiful gold plated example that was my keepsake, but I sold it.

I don't play banjo, just the drums, but one of my grand uncles had a 4 string tenor banjo that my Mother ended up with & gave to me. It was in absolutely mint condition, but I found that there is no real interest in a tenor banjo. My wife is a bluegrass musician who sings & plays guitar & upright bass. She has a 5 string banjo, but hasn't done much with it as far as learning. Prior to her getting that 5 string, a friend of ours who owned an instrument repair shop but passed away last May, modified the tenor banjo I had with a Fender guitar neck. He carved an ebony piano key for the bridge, & all the work he did can be easily changed back.

I have pics of the guitar neck banjo somewhere, but they have to be scanned or dug up from a disc. I'll try to find them tomorrow & post them. In the meantime, here's a video of my wife's band at the Dutchess County fair last summer. It's the only song that was taped & posted on line from the show & I wish I had another since there are much better songs her band does.
