How to find out if an engine is locked???

Hey guys, I have a question. How do you find out if an engine is locked up or not?

What do you mean by "locked"?  Do you mean a engine that is seized up or are you talking about hydraulic lock?

Seized up..not usuable

If the engine is out of the car, you try to turn the flywheel.
If engine is in the car, put a pipe/ ratchet on the pully up front, and try to turn it this way

And there are a lot of reasons why it may be seized, it doesn't necessarily mean it's unuseable Cody.  I'm guessing that yours no longer turns over?

It hasnt been turned over for a good 6 years so I'm curious to see if it will still turn over.

The just do what suntech told you and worry about it if it doesn't turn after you make that determination.

pull all the plugs  , & squirt loads of WD40 in there let it sit for a few days , then squirt a bit of trans fluid in there , with all the plugs out , get a breaker bar on the harmonic balancer nut , & slowly try to turn it , the  correct direction of rotation .. if it don't turn turn it back wards & forwards  with more pressure ,  , if it is still stiff to turn squirt more wd 40 & let in sit for a while . , if it still don't turn you will have to wip the heads off & see whats going on   , best thing to do so you can get a breaker bar on the nut easy  is to remove the  fan & belt, it will save your knuckles

Why not just apply power to the starter and see if it turns over?

PB blaster works as well, id try it first with the starter, just because i motor hasnt been started in a while, doesnt always mean it wont turn over, heck the 360 in my 78 poweragon had sat from 1990-2001 and it fired right up once i put a new fuel pump and rebuilt the carb,   try the suggestions and let us know what happens
