The money went to a worthy cause. That makes the car worth it in my book.

I agree 100%!

It was HIS car when he stood on the roof so it's his decision on what he wants to do with it. Remember that one picture somebody posted of a guy standing on the cowl of his Coronet and pressure washing it and everybody bashed him about it UNTIL HE REGISTERED on the site and then everybody shut up. I bet if John registered on here and posted, people would stop saying how stupid he is for walking on the car. Thats just my opinion though

If you guys think the roof thing was bad, then you would absolutely cry seeing me with my own GL.

I've done just about everything short of jumping it.  Running hood slides, banging my friend's car with the pushbar, drifting it crossed-up on gravel roads, emergency brake 180's . . .

I think John may have been drunk?
Something tells me theres not a whole lot of people there that arent every year. I have never been to one but it looks like a pretty fun event even if your just there to spectate. I think timing might have played a factor in the price this car sold for as well. Maybe a year ago or a year from now this car might have brought alot more but things all around seem to be in a big slump right now.

IMO the debate is not really who the car belonged to when he decided to stand on the roof. Who cares? My point is that it's a stupid and disrespectful thing to do and if the guy could pull his big pompous head out of his keester long enough to see beyond himself he might realize that. It was disrespectful to the car, to the future owner, to the charity and to Charger/muscle car fans. That's it. The whole episode was an embarrassment.

John says this should be the most expensive Charger ever, I thought the infamous Lee #1 was the one that everyone worships?

TUFCAT

I got it!!! -- Maybe he was only trying to show off that he still has his singing voice - - and its still in tune... :scratchchin: which really wasn't that bad!  :D

No history?...According to John this car was the last one used in the ORIGINAL series.  I know the hardcore DOH fan will pay a premium for a car used in either series let alone the last car of the original one.

The car was only used in the reunion movies so it is technically the last "real" general used by the original cast. It wasn't an original series car.

really nice stance on that charger but the tires look small.. thanks for the link.

Yeah I have to agree that John standing on the roof and singing that song lowered the price of that car.  I thought it was funny when they couldn't get the hood latch undone.

I don't come to this forum very often because of the anti-Dukes/General Lee attitude.Yes I have a General Lee one of the earliest replicas around.Became one in 1989. I see all this talk about it hurt the price by him doing that stunt but then you turn right around and say it went way to high? :shruggy: I will agree even as big a Dukes/Lee fan as I am that car wasn't worth that much. I cringed a bit by him standing up there too. Hey whoever was bidding was well aware of what damage(if any) was caused and still bid. I was told that a lot of these cars are pre-bought before it even hits the auction floor and they run them across the auction block anyway just to see how much it'll go for.Maybe this was an example of that?

Ghoste

If you think it wasn't about 400,000 too much for the car, just remember that the next time the Hellpigs are painting some turd orange and fishing for a new sucker who just so happened to see a car just like Hans go on B-J for almost a half million.

I think the point is that the price might have gone higher (and less damage would have been done to the car, more money gathered for charity, less embarrassing for DOH and Charger fans, etc.) had Mr. Schneider not stood on the roof and sang his little song... a sentiment you seem to agree with. And even if there is rampant anti-Dukitism here I can't imagine anyone being so afraid of it they would not frequent the site or post pictures of their car. The most vicious thing I've ever read regarding the GL is the "I would never do that to my car" sentiment. Who cares? There are lots of things other people wouldn't do to my car too but it's my car. Short of people telling me I ought not stand on the roof or cowl, try to jump a river with it, cut it up for parts, etc., (please say something to me if I ever do such things) I don't see why any of us should be all that worried about the opinions of others. I seem to hear as much crap about painting 2nd gen Chargers black as anyone else hears about painting their '69s orange. Don't care. Mine is black and I spent a lot of money making it so. If anyone here wants it the original green send me a money order for $20k to make it right and another $15k to finish it correctly and I'll gladly do it. :2thumbs:

If you were originally ready to pay half a million dollars for that car, then I'm gonna go out on a limb here and suggest that you were still gonna bid on the car whether it has a slight dent on the roof or not.

If you were not originally intending to spend half a million dollars on a General Lee, then I really doubt a classier auction would have made a scrap of difference in your feelings.

That's a catchy sounding argument but I disagree. At least for me, if I were rich and prepared to spend a 1/2 million on that car the whole scene would have turned me off completely. I would have just sent some money to the charity independently and bought a Charger somewhere else.

Mike DC

In the case of most cars selling at Barrett-Jackson, I would agree with you.

But we're not talking about a spotless original Hemi/4spd '69 Charger 500 though.  We're talking about people bidding $450,000 for a General Lee.  Nobody with $450,000 to piss away can possibly miss the severe irony in paying that kind of money for the iconic Hollywood mullet-mobile.  No matter how shiny it is, it's impossible to even tell your friends/neighbors what you spent & took home in one sentence without them giggling.

And nobody who eyeballed JS's car ahead of time would ever mistake it for a show poodle either.  They might have washed & waxed it up for the cameras, but even a cursory walk-around would be enough to make you realize you're not bidding on a perfect piece.

I would agree with you if there were not a charity involved. I don't know what percentage they got for the kids but if I were a rich guy that would most definitely soften the $450k blow to my wallet if I'm not a big time DOH fan. Had that charity not been involved I don't think it would have gone so high. Maybe I'm wrong but that's just the way I view it. No doubt there are a few died-in-the-wool DOH fans that are well off and maybe that's who won it. Maybe they like the thought of JS's shoes putting dents in the roof (maybe it's kind of like Jessica Alba ruining your favorite shirt with lipstick) but my point is that most Charger/muscle car fans probably would not appreciate him standing on the roof of any classic car. Those who don't care probably like John Schnider a lot more than they like Chargers.

Now that may be worth $450K

I will have to agree with most everything Mike said Curtis...............

The very well off DOH fan, that has that kind of money, is going to consider a few scratches on the
roof from the ''prior'' owner ''JS'', nothing more than another one of JS signatures on the car. I have
seen a few ''TV series'' cars not restored, going for upward of 250k, and those cars were not owned
by a ''celebrate'', or tricked out anything like JS GL.

So, all I can say is, I don't know anybody that can afford to pay 450k for a car worth ?  but I can see
that ''maybe'' few scratches to that person will not mean a drop in the bucket   :yesnod: :yesnod:

The way I see it Barrett-Jackson is no more than an annual show.  The whole charade is about 90% show and 10% auction. John Schneider was just part of the show!   They are no more an auction house than Monster garage is a body and fender shop.  The show is over! I hope you will watch and enjoy it with me next year too. They accomplished what they wanted, it's over and we're still talking about. P.T. Barnum couldn't have done a better job himself. To next year. :cheers:May it be even more contraversal.
