Hey gang..

Anyone have one of these? My wife just bought me a Vizio wide-screen HDTV (42" or 47", can't remember).. The picture seems to be ok, but I'm assuming the cable source isn't as good as the HDTV source... I have to get the tv company to activate the HDTV channels.. I'm assuming those channels will have a lot more clarity and better sharpness/resolution since this is a HDTV and performs better with HD channels...

A standard signal will look like sh*t on an HD TV. It'll look worse than what you had prior probably.

OK, then it all make sense...... Althought the picture isn't that bad, it's nice to know it's performing the way it should and when I get the HDTV channels up and running, it'll be even better !!!

Yep...you need to get a Hi-Def Cable/Satellite box from your provider. You'll notice the difference right away...night and day. Some digital (non-HD) cable channels actually look pretty good - almost DVD quality, in fact. They still won't even come close to full on HD, and regular/analog channels WILL look like crap. Depending on how you set up the TV and Cable box screen settings, you can get most channels (even the crappy ones) to look halfway decent.  Play with it till you get it the way you think it looks best.

Also, playing DVD's on a standard DVD player is no good with an HD tv - they'll look worse than a VHS tape that's been taped over several times. You'll need a DVD player with upconversion capabilities (I got mine at Costco for $60). Not sure how they work, but they make your DVD's look...well, at least like a DVD. Again, not HD, but still pretty decent. Or you can splurge and just get a HiDef player - looks like BuRay is winning the battle vs HD DVD, but it may still be too soon to call it. You don't want to start rebuilding your collection into either of the formats and then find out they're obsolete.

My buddy just got a new unit. He would flip between the regular channel and the HD channell and theresa big difference in picture quality. We were checking out the NASCAR race and normal the pavement was gray and on HD you could see every crack and the bugs on the front of the cars. WE have noticed the HD channels on our cable are a few seconds slower then the normal channel .

I think it's safe to say that BluRay has won. Toshiba just cut the pricing on the HD machines across the board and one of the major studios announced that they would not release anything else in HD.

my buddy got a vizio a couple weeks back traded in his sharp for a larger vizio and got money back too... says it's better,.. they sure are selling well,.. the brand broke into the top ranks of makers in record time by under cutting the larger brand names on price,.. like lexus and acura did... the HD sevice costs alot more money though..

same here...I have Time Warner Cable and I think I pay something like $7 for HD. Sucks that I only have maybe 20 HD channels (including the local stations, which I would be getting for free anyway). I hear they're adding more soon.

Either way, I'm getting a PS3 pretty soon....BluRay baby!

If you have strong local channels broadcasting in hd and a digital tuner built in (most nice models olders need the box tuner addition) hook up your rabbit ears or antenna and get digital over the air free...

Broadacst HD is pretty good. In some cases, it's better than what comes through cable because it's straight from the station and not reprocessed by the cable company's equipment.

Some cable companies will compress the signal they get from the broadcasters.

Broadcast is free.

I'm going to be looking into switching over to broadcast and giving the hd cable box the boot.
19.99 a month rental plus 5.99 for the basic HD channels, plus another 6 for the "premium HD bundle" which consists of 2 channels... HDNET and DiscoveryHD.
The downside is that I lose the PVR, but I'm seeing more and more of these available at decent prices now...

I went with the TW triple play for now.    I was paying $55 for extended cable,  another $55 for internet and $60 - $80 a month for the land phone.   It's about $130 or so for the 3 together... maybe a few $ more with the taxes and fees.   So I save a few bucks.   :shruggy:

I got a Sharp 32 HD LCD for my 25th work anniversary.   It fits in the wall unit so I'm OK with it.  I'd have preferred the Rolex watch they used to give out - oh well.    I was looking between Sony and Panasonic before.

Up here we get about 2 channels without cable so it's more of a necessity.    When I moved here basic cable service was around $20 a month.

Make sure you get an HDMI cable and run it from the HD reciever to the TV, you will notice a huge difference on the HD channels.

I got the PS3 for my son for Christmas, the blu ray movies look great.  I also have an Oppo 1080P upconversion DVD player, you can only get them online but they are unbelievable for the price.  They have been compared to upconversion dvd players costing $1000.

I tried that........... Albeit there is a difference, I don't think I'm getting the resolution and picture I'm hearing so much about concerning HD broadcasting...  Maybe I need to get a HD antenna and try the "over the air way freebie" signal...... I've heard that Direct TV HD is so much better............ I'm have a feeling that the signal I'm getting from AT&T isn't the best in the world.........

Troy the one thing I learned after going TV shopping last year is it's always best to stick with the big brands. LG, Samsung, Toshiba are probably your best bets for TVs. Theres alwasy new brands popping up but the best way to shop is going to best buy or circuit city where they have all the TVs on so you can compare them.  If after you get your Direct TV dish and you dont see a big difference in quality, talk to the wife and see if she wouldn't mind exchanging. My parents just baught a LG 47inch 1080i and it beats the hell out of my 50 inch plasma  :'( . Good luck with it, if you need anymore help just ask.

bull

After looking into all this BS for the past three months or so I've decided it's just too convoluted and inconclusive to drop $1,500+ on a friggin' flat screen LCD or plasma TV right now. Companies are already making TVs in the 1080 resolution which stations won't be broadcasting in for probably two years. Then there's the battle between BlueRay and HD technology and I heard about another new projection technology coming out soon that's supposed to "blow the competition away" like everything else already has. The video stores near my home have something like 20 titles in both HD and BlueRay so you know that's shaping up to be another Beta vs. VHS war. The good news about all this is that the $400 bulb inside these big $1,800 TVs won't last until Feb. '09 so you can at least enjoy them until then.

Me, I'm going to wait until some guy wants to offload his two-year-old, 42-inch tube set for $50 and then I'm going to take my two govt. vouchers down to Radio Shack next Feb and buy a couple digital receivers/converters until this all gets ironed out.

MorePwr

I've had a Visio 47" 1080p lcd for almost a year. no complaints, great picture, best audio compared to any of the other brands and at the time, half the price.

hemi68charger

Well,, got a Blu-Ray player and movie to see my Vizio's capability... That thing rocks !!!! Sooo, my resolution on my cable tv HD channels isn't my tv, it's the service.. Looks like I'm going DirecTv or Dish Network...

Nice.

I've been looking at smaller flat screen TV's recently to replace an old TV in a spare room. I didn't pay much attention to Vizio because I hadn't heard of the brand up until about a year ago. I saw one on display last week with a Blu-Ray disc demo, & was surprised how nice the picture was. They seem very reasonable in price, so if I decide to replace the slightly blurry, slightly off-color, 25" RCA picture tube TV from 1978, with no remote, a broken keypad, & a speaker that doesn't work, I'll probably consider one.  :D
