Nice looking Charger, but I prefer my pipes out back.  Besides, here in Virginia, those would be considered illegal.  :icon_smile_blackeye:

Doesn't Big Sugar have them on his 66?

Yup. I love his car, but I still prefer them out the back too.

I also prefer them out the back on a second gen.  Side pipes clutter up the side of the car and take away from the body lines.

I'm sure it also raises tire temp too, especially when your on the highway. I don't like the sound either. Certainly a low budget idea  :Twocents:

funny you should ask. My 73 is in the shop now getting a new system put in that will come out in front of the rear wheels. I will try and post a pic when I get it back tonight.

the heat from the exhaust gases would melt the rear tires, creating huge amounts of smoke.... at least thats what i would tell the police officer...

Most states require the exhaust to exit behind the rear axle.....that or behind the side glass. When parked and running, the exhaust can pollute the passenger compartment when side windows are open....not good....
Side exhaust also tends to leave soot on the side of the car over time or a least discolor the paint....

learical1

I put a set on my lemon-twist SuperBird back in the mid-70's.  Never melted any tires.  Driving around in the Arizona heat with the benefits of A/C, I always drove with the windows down.  Carbon Monoxide never seemed to affect me.  :eek2:

TONS of cars have side pipes, etc. and are legal.  And we are talking about adapting the factory T/A-AAR side exits to a B-body.  I can't picture where they'd be illegal. :shruggy:

Each state has different laws governing this.  I called and checked in ND, side exit ehaust must exit the rear of the passenger compartment.  IF there is a side window is MUST be non-functional.  IN other words the back passenger window could not function to do this in ND......

Yeah....
Also, alot of side pipes were installed on Corvettes (and vans...haha) during the 70's....these were "legal" as well, because the exit was behind the passenger compartment....

How do YOU know they are legal??? Just because a car is liscenced for the street doesn't make it modifications "legal"......there are plenty of laws on the books that even your local police are not aware of (especially the young guys), as it doesn't come up much....headlight height laws, fender laws, etc....

i like side exhaust and and am going to do it to my charger once i get it back. hopefully its legal in cali

I guess just leave the back seat out and tell them the pass compartment stops at the back of the front seats  :icon_smile_big:

'cause I know everything!  :yesnod:  :nana:

and shouldn't that be "How do you KNOW they are legal??? :D

Seriously, I assumed they were legal cause all my friends with side pipes on their corvettes and cobras, when they'd get pulled over for 'display of power' and written up for every other thing the cops could think of, never were ticketed for having the side pipes. (I'll retract part of that, one guy did get get written up, but it was because the side pipes had no mufflers.)  [btw, we are talking arizona here, home of no inspections other that emmissions.]  My REAL question is "Since the T/A-AAR's had back seats, functioning rear windows and side exits, were they illegal in some states?"  Anybody know?

No...I meant it how I wrote it.... :icon_smile_big:
The law may not have been in introduced yet during the time at which the TA's/AAR's were in production,........and on Vette's and Cobras with side pipes, the exhaust exits behind the passenger dept., since the pipes exit is further back than the passenger compartment bulkhead. :2thumbs: Same with 70's Camaros.....no 1/4 glass......

I wouldn't be caught dead with that style on my car. If it's a T/A or AAR that's another matter. That's how they came stock. On anything else they look low rent.

why would you say its low budget? Maybe that person has a low budget or just likes it like that . Hey it looks kool

Low rent means just that. Back in high school (mid 70's) many of my fellow students would bring the exhaust out in front of the rear wheels simply because it was cheaper than running the pipes out the back. No tailpipes to buy. Sorry, but I don't look at it as cosmetic as much as I look at it being done to save money.  If you like the look then "rock on with your bad hand" son!   :Twocents:,

Not a Charger  :D, but I have legal factory side exit exhaust on my car  :nana:...she is a bit of a lowrider.....there's a reflection of a newer version on my door...lol....CO..Hmmmm

71ChallengeHer

TA and AAR pipes were legal because of the length. The length of the pipes are the same as the ones that come out the back.

Were there not some states (Connecticut or Maine or Mass or ??) that did not allow the TA cars to be sold with side exhaust even when they were new?

Sorry it took so long to get a photo up, i wanted to get my paint job done before I posted any more picks of my sled.

I have em. Well, not exactly T/A pipes. They are 4" after market pipes I got on EBAY.  440, headers, 2-1/2" pipes, glass packs, 4"tips. It's um....kinda loud.
This pic is from last summer when the Power Tour came to Racine, WI.

That paint job is cool. When did you have it done or did you do it? What paint brand also?
Hey, you can hate the game but don't hate the player.

74-StreetMachine

I didn't paint it. I did all the body work and priming and block sanding, and more priming and block sanding, and more priming and block sanding. A couple of friends of mine painted it. I was going for the early 70s funny car look with a bit of an 80s pro street thrown in. We searched through some old Hot Rod and Car Craft magazines for some ideas. And also added some of our own. Plus they wanted to " try some stuff". Which looking back now I think that meant smokin a fat one, THEN painting my car.

The paint is all lacquer. Ditzler hugger orange for the base and House Of Color candies for the stripes. Finished off with a mix of pink and gold pearl and several coats of clear. It's kind of hard to make out the date on the receipt, it reads  08/22/85.  So this coming Sept my paint job will be 23 years old!  :o

To be honest I'm getting a little tired of looking at it and would like something different but I just can't afford it now. Maybe someday I'll get up enough nerve to try painting it myself.
