Those funky old wing cars.

I've been spending an enjoyable weekend going through old videos of John Pappas from Mopar Nationals events back in the 80's and I couldn't help but notice how many old wing cars are on them with funky paint jobs that have come up on this forum in recent months.
Somehow the custom striping and paint jobs on those cars looks much less dated than the hairstyles and Adidas shorts.

Gotta love those Adidas shorts with tube socks with red/white/blue/green/yellow stripes at the top don't you? I mean whats not to like about those?  :eek2:

Thanks to Doug I spent 14 hours yesterday staring at and reading old DSAC newsletters. Got a box of newsletter from 1975 up to 1992 in the mail yesterday. Took me 14 hours but I made it all of the way through them, reading that is. Now will start the real work.  :icon_smile_cool:

I have to go digging through old photo albums again now.  The 84 show at Indy has one scene when John's Superbird is cruising through the parking lot filming cars and has to stop for some doofus standing in front of the car taking a picture of it.  My kids are convinced that I am that doofus.  I'm not so sure but if I have a pic of the front of a white Superbird driving through the parking area, well, there you go...

Hey in his 1984 video, make note of the Gunmetal grey Daytona with the red stripe running from the tail to the nose cone. And when you see that car drive by, make a mental note of the 2 kids in the backseat. Those kids would be me and my sister.  :nana:

I was wondering about that believe it or not because I remember you mentioning being there as young 'un and I did spot them in the Daytona.
As for me, I found the album and went throught the pics, it's either a different doofus or that shot never turned out.
The other thing from that particular video that I don't recall was the parade of wings around the track.  I totally missed that event but I spent some time at the swap meet which was set up in a parking lot across the street from the track so it must have occured when I was over there.
Damned sorry I missed seeing that.

I'd have to make a trip over to Thailand but I know that my dad has multiple old VHS tapes of the same shows. I remember very vividly watching hours upon hours of footage of the shows from 1979 thru 1986 on VHS tapes when growing up. Many hours of drag racing action of wing cars running down the tracks, and many many hours of wing car shows.

69 500, I am sure hoping to see pics of that Daytona your dad was trading the Boss 429 for, after you visit the attic of your dad's friend that is.  Wonder how many hours it will take you to read through all that material?

I'm hoping to make a trip to the guys house this summer at some point. And at that time I plan on making a trip up to his attic to view the box. As far as how long it would take to go through it, depends on how much interesting info is in the box. I just spent 14 hours yesterday going through a box of newsletters that Doug mailed to me. And I fully intend to go throgh that same box at least 3-4 more times in the next few weeks. I'm sure I missed some intersting stuff in there along the way.

Oh and I didn't forget that you wanna see that car. I will let you know as soon as I find the photo's of it.

I don't know the car, but the custom striping is definitely what I'm talking about.  I know wing cars weren't unique by any stretch when it comes to a little paint customizing in the 70's but the wing and nose just force you to look at them a little more closely than you would if the same schemes were used on a different car.

This is from the 1980 Winged Warrior (at that time Nascar Street Classics) National Meet.  Definately my best side, as I was judging Daytonas that year.

Tthe Red 440 daytona wasnt Tim Wellborns car with a hemi

Tim sold that car sometime in the 80's and bought it back a few years ago.   It does not have the big front spoiler on it now, but the rest of it is the same.    It covered just a few miles in all the years in between.
