I am thankful to Ford for getting the retro ball rolling and all those Mustang fans who bought one.

I would think Chyrsler got the ball rolling with the PT ;D......but then, this latest "trend" of the US automakers jumping on the retro bandwagon in hopes of boosting sales by rereleasing mediocre "interpretations" of yesteryears great cars, instead of actually building something ORIGINAL.....is just sad.....it won't keep the ship afloat......

What's really sad, is when we pull up next to one of these new "musclecars" (Challenger, Charger, whatever) at a stop light with our old, REAL musclecar, the "new" owner in the other lane  most likey won't know what our car even is!

Is it wrong to say "it looks better than the concept??  --- Well, ...it does!!!  I don't think the Camaro will have the same fate. From what I've seen, the production Camaro is a far cry from the concept version....and I was a BIG fan of the Camaro concept.

IMO the PT cruiser was an entirely new model that was built as multi purpose car that did have a "retro" look. On the other hand, building a modern 2 door rear wheel drive muscle car that enthusiasts have been screaming about for decades which has a lot of common design elements with the original is something much different. Based on Chrysler's own statements about the 4 door Charger three years ago I think the "retro" Mustang changed some opinions at Chrysler about the 2 door marketplace and that is a good thing.

Even if some people don't recognize our old cars while driving a new one it may be more because the Chrysler musclecars died so long ago.  You have to expect some younger people to not be as up on 30 year old models compared to a Camaro, Trans Am, Mustang or Corvette that have been built in larger numbers for many more years. Although, if someone does not recognize an old Challenger pulling up next to their new one they are flat out blind or wearing  :coolgleamA:;)

That would look good next to my Charger.  By the time I can afford one in a few more years they should have all the bugs worked out.   ;D

It's not bad. I hope the 6.4L makes its way in there soon. It needs to compete w/the upcoming CTS-V ~550hp.

The car seems to be more slab sided now. The concept looks more tucked under on the sides.

I'm confused? How is a ~$27k V6, R/T ~$30k 340hp 5.7L HEMI, & a SRT8 ~$40k 425hp 6.1L HEMI considered expensive in 2008? The GT500 is ~$41 & a GT is ~$28k. Most German cars near this hp will be much more $. An example GC SRT8 420hp ~$45k, & the 490hp MB ML63 is ~$90k! I'm not saying I want higher prices, but the Mopars are a good bang for the buck. Yes, lower pricing would be great, & less weight too. These modern vehicles are heavy, full of electronic gizmoes/etc.

It looks as good as we can possibly expect a retro Chally to look.

Chrysler is working with an existing midsize sedan platform (same way the original E-bodies were made), and they've got a hell of a lot more demands on their product in terms of federal crash testing & aerodynamic issues than they did in the 1970s.

The development of this thing from the concept is right up there with the 1960s Charger III and the 1990s Viper.  It's practically unaltered from the concept car version in the big picture.

----------------------------------------------------------

Now they just need to hold the price under some kind of control.

The existing Magnum/300C/Chagnum cars on that platform can be bought down in the $25K area.  But they'll probably base the Chally in the mid-$30s and that's a mistake IMO.  I think they should option the most powerful/luxurious ones up to the mid-$30s, but make that basic body for sale with an automatic V6 & cloth seats for something in the high $20s.

694spdRT

The base pricing on the SRT8 is just under $38,000. You have to add the $2000 or so gas guzzler tax to it but that is not Chrysler's fault.  I think pricing is going to be very similar to the Charger's when the base models come out. Your not going to buy any 1st year car that has the anticipated demand of this and get a smokin' deal. If I wanted it I have a dealer ready to sell me the orange SRT8 he has coming for window sticker.

I expect the base hemi R/T's to come in the low 30's and go up from there with the fancy options. Lets face facts, when an Caliber R/T stickers at $23K your not going to get a Challenger R/T for $500 more.  :shruggy:

I'll take a new Camaro, and I really don't like Chevrolets

edit:  The local Dodge dealer told us that the actual sticker price for the new Challengers would be closer to that of the GT500's....closer to $60,000

They have already released the sticker pricing. If a dealer wants a huge premium find another dealer. It is not like they are only making a couple hundred of these plus the 09's will be out in six months. Dealers were the same way early on with the SRT8 Charger's and 300's but eventually they could be bought under sticker.
