From what I have heard the rim blow steering wheel  (S83) was a rare option for a superbird.  Does anyone know how many birds came with this option???  Here is a picture of one.  Any more out there???

I haven't seen but 2 cars that had this steering wheel option in person. One was a blue car that me and my dad looked at up in Michigan about 20+ years ago. The other I can't recall what color it was, but i have a photo of it as well.

I can see why it's rare.  Besides the PITA of driving with a rim blow wheel, those things are plain ugly!  I've only seen one myself, can't recall if it was a Road Runner or a GTX but it was a 70 model.

A friend of mine has that steering wheel on a FJ5 superbird U code car.And another friend has that same wheel on a 70 coronet. But removed it cause horn contacts issues.I had a ebody with the rimblow wheel and horn contact problems. And mounted a hidden universal horn button above the dimmer switch and used my foot

A friend of mine sold a petty blue bird  with white interior that had one, And yes it sucks to drive with it

69_500

Sucks to drive with it? How so, other than accidentally honking the horn when trying to turn the wheel?  :nana: I mean what could suck about driving a wing car?

Danny,
It was on Jim Waltons Petty blue V-code Bird. A console auto car and power steering. It drove nice with one finger laying on the center pad. Problem is you pull into a parking space or or parking lot you will BEEP the horn without warning.

He got tired of it and disconnected the horns

y3chargerrt

If I had a Mopar with that wheel I'd remove it cause its UGLY.

Horns? Should be one purple horn.

It seems to me that it would be difficult to perform the 'beep-beep' road runner call with the rim blow.   IMHO, it never should have been allowed on a road runner or superbird.

I would call the rim blow steering wheel unique not ugly.  I would also agree that it is easy to inadverently sound the horn with it.  Driving experience:  Driving a superbird is not tarnished because of the rim blow. any bird is great to drive.  Does not matter if it is a u, v, or  r code, or auto on the floor or column, or a 4 speed.  Just my opinion...

Jim Waltons Petty Bird had the rim blow? I don't remember that. I just remember a trailer hitch on the back of it. Or was that his other superbird?

I know there was a B5 blue one that my dad looked into buying up in Michigan that had the rim blow steering wheel. I remember when he took it out for a drive, I think he honked the horn like 5 times in just a 5-10 mile drive.

bebeep1969

I would drive any bird with any type of steering wheel except one with the tuff steering wheels some people put in there cars.  That wheel is awful ugly!!!

trailer hitch was on the petty blue  4 spd bird with no vinyl top - black interior (original  orange  V-code car )

rim blow was on the petty blue 6 pack auto with a vinyl top and white interior

69_500

I know I have a photo some where here in my box of the petty bird pulling a trailer with the other petty bird on the trailer.

Was definately something that I remember very well as a kid.

Big Bird

I recently  purchased  a lime-light Bird with this option in North Jersey. It now resides in South Jersey, VIN # RM23UOA175667. I had contacted Doug @ the DSAC with the question of correctness, & he informed me of the rareness of S83 option
BIG - BIRD :)

Welcome to the site, BigBird!

Just to beat some others to the punch, we'd love to see some pictures of your "new" car.

S83 is an unusual option on any car, much less a 'Bird.  I remember once years ago I had inquired about putting one of those on my R/T just because it was odd.  A friend talked me out of it, as he apparently knew how easy it was to blow the horn when you didn't mean to.

Welcome to the forum big bird.  What did Doug say/inform you of the rareness. Did he give you a % of birds that have the rim blow?
Is there anyway to guess how many u code, v code , or r code birds came with this option?
