Could any one tell when and if there was a coolant recovery tank 1971?? option? or standard equipment?
I can't find any data or pictures at all on this, but I have one installed, but forsure not the original, there is one on eBay;

as far I know they are somekind of replacement or "upgrade" for 71/72s. they started to appear on mids 71s but was not ( and still ) not common to see. REALLY RARE on those years... 73/74 comes ALL with the bottle but very diff from that one, so is not true thats for 73/74

they sit at a side of the rad, however that was the original place to the windshield washer bottle on 71/72s. Dunno remember how really is the original 71/72s recovery bottle. Has been posted here thought!

Okay, thanks Nacho!
The one on eBay will be correct for -71 or??? and mounted on the same side as the washer bottle?
The original radiator drain comes of on the drivers side, I have seen aftermarket bottles mounted on the opposite side of the radiotor core also..
Any one have a picture of an original installed recovery tank, I appreciate a posting here!

the extra bracket is to fit it, however none original recovery bottle use an extra bracket... All I have seen does already have its own location made on car.

that must be made to fit on any year E body too, since frame is  the same on all years and pretty much similar than 71/72 B bodies on front end section

I never made to save one of those original 71/72 recovery bottles pics on engine bay mounted :slap:

I would also like to see what you guys out there use for a recovery tank :shruggy: I have a 69 also and also wondered if I could mount a 3rd gen recovery tank on the driver side of a 2nd gen :shruggy: Also has any one used an after market recovery tank on a 2nd gen :shruggy: I want a recovery tank not one thats justs an overflow only tank.

I think that unit being sold could be fit on earliers ? you can look at the extra bracket, and remember the frame shape or inner fender is pretty much similar somehow between 71/72 and earliers, specially maybe at radiator support ? would need to be compaired closer.

In a note appart... you can use ANY kind of bottle to that, as far you find the way to attach and get the propper cap, or maybe one good homemade. Just need the radiator hose arrives to bottom of bottle to get recover the water once radiator gets cold and pressure makes get back the water. I can make a diagram about how it is an overflow/recovery reservoir.

Caps are being sold appart around.

this is ALL the science... radiator hose sinks on water to be able to recoivery the water/coolant on bottle once gets cold. Same pressure that release the water/coolant when hot on cap valve, then makes retun when gets cold, just by vacuum procedure, sucking back.

The secondary hose is to release the hot vapors and keep safe the reservor from somekind of pressure.

so anykind of bottle you find will work as far you keep this principle... radiator hose sunk on liquid

Great, but if it's not original anyway I maybee should save some bucks by modify this one..

We put a catch tank on VegasMikes 68' Charger, but we made a change to it. Instead of just using the bottom threaded port as a drain we removed the petcock and put a "T" fitting in it's place. Then put the petcock in at the bottom location. The side port got a hoes that runs up to the rad. overflow port. Of course the top port goes to the bottom of the tank. Then we put a 90* elbow in the top port and ran a drain line down next to the tank to drain out onto the road if it ever dumps that much fluid.

The aluminum tank came from Summit and may be their branded piece. Maybe Mike will see this and chime in.
At any rate, this puts more coolant into the system by keeping the rad. filled to the top and when the motor expands it pulls in more fluid from the tank..

Mike, Ron and I put it to the test going to the MATS last March. It works great...  :2thumbs:

I'm not saying is not original at least on 71/72 B and 70/74 E bodies, I'm saying definitelly is not for 73/74 B bodies. It could be to 71/72 ? not sure. I can't remember right now IF 71/72s with recovery bottle option was that one or similar, what I THINK is not

Ok, I have several doubts... have seen the overflow hose running to both sides. So hard to say about where should it be the recover bottle. lats time I remember have seen one was mounted somehow on driver side, directly on to radiator I think

1972Rallye

The N76 Coolant recovery option was offered on 1972 Chargers - I have heard that some late 1971's got them, but I have never seen one.  The only thing listed for a b-body in my parts book is for 4dr & Wagon.  The tank in the auction is nothing like an original 1972 piece.  I have never seen one mounted on a car, so I don't know how well it looks or works.

The originals are mounted on the drivers side between the battery and the fan shroud.  I requires a tank/bracket assembly, upper bracket, lower bracket and hose/cap assembly.  I've posted pic of the asm mounted and out of the car.  I have a complete asm for my '72 (it originally came with one), but cannot install it until I get the correct radiator in the car.

Hope that helps...

Here ya go:

what is the difference between these two radiators? is one 3 row or 4 row why is the upper hose on one side and the other is on the other side whats the difference?

mikesbbody

thanks for the info nacho and bob, i have wanted to have the factory looking tank on my 72 for a long time now (you dont want to see what i have on there now lol) i have the "26" radiator i dont know if i have the holes drilled for it (i dont think it was a option on my car) i would like it though. Can the whole deal be bought? bottle, brackets, etc? thanks again.  :2thumbs:

Nacho-RT74

try to get the right one ? I find allmost imposible. Now try to fit an aftermarket one ? pretty easy as far you made the hose gets the bottom of bottle and keeps sunk on water

Caps are around, you can get any plastic bottle and try to fit with some clamp around. Of course would be great try to get same size bottle neck than the cap

dunno how would fit the new repro one being sold, specially with windshield washer bottle still on place. Dunno how is the design of that part or where they thought to fit on car.

Maybe was designed to still fit on passenger side, to radiator itself, and around the fan shroud and that could be the reason of that shape ? that maybe would keep the washer bottle since will fit just right in front of.

Like Nacho said, they are nearly impossible to find - especially complete. Since it was a 1972 only design, the aftermarket is nonexistant. Usually, if you can find a used one, the lower bracket is missing.  The last one I saw on e-bay was a few years ago and the complete system sold for over $375.00.

mikesbbody

thanks again bob, over 375.00! wow! i guess ill be doing something different lol! I looked and it seemed like my shroud would be in the way. I have the 26 radiator i do like the look of that one though...

For what its worth, the coolant recovery assembly photos posted by 1972Rallye are identical to the
assembly  that came with my 1972 Rallye 440+4. I am the original owner of the car.

current repop reservoirs design are based on the 73-74 E-body bottles

chgr500

so what's this one for? ...I've seen the same style as the one previously pictured, but it was mounted on the right side of the rad support..

Nacho-RT74

that's 73/74 B body bottle ( or at least does look it is ), mounts on passenger side of radiator core support. The lower part fist just RIGHT ON frame rail

EDITING:

no, is not, pretty much similar, but the neck is unexistant on 73/74, is simply flat top and then directly the cap. This one has a top neck
