Correct color for 69 Charger grille using spray cans

I remember as a kid that , I know for 100% sure Gm cars were lacquer as I bought a 69 Camaro pace car that had brand new Imron paint on it and I had the whole car sandblasted and done in Lacquer as I knew they were from the factory.  I remember thinking that ford or Mopar, I thought Mopar cars were enamel.  Good point on what was used by vender's?  That's a whole different story.  I'm going to look for the Krylon dull aluminum I heard good news about.

My recollection is that Ford and Chrysler products were painted with Acrylic Enamel.  GM products were painted with lacquer.  The GM had a better finish----less orange peel.  And you could rub out and polish the lacquer.  Not so the acrylic enamel.  Dupont Imron was used on helicopters and other industrial applications.  It has lead in it so was pretty much banned later except for industrial use.  But it gives a beautiful finish.  I know a guy locally that restores old industrial engines and he uses it.  He has done work for the Smithsonian.  I sure wouldn't have wanted to be around when that car painted with Imron when it was sandblasted.  Even trace amounts of lead can cause learning difficulties in children.  I bet that shop still has lead dust in nooks and crannies of the bldg.

Gee, would of never thought of that?  I was real anal back then, today I would leave it Imron.  So that's why they stopped using it?

I think it is still around , but no where near as good as it used to be . It was very high in Isocyanate's!! I used to spray this shit without a mask when I was a dumb kid !!.

Very easy, just undo what is done.

I tryed unbolting the trim (from the back) but it wouldnt come off.....oh well, I guess I'll try again when I get home

I know a bunch of guys who did restorations back in the early 80's (if you want to call most of those a restoration) used lacquer paint, and it is totally different than an origional paint job. I'm still trying to look up exactly what paints were used on these cars and their trim parts, but if and when I do find it I'll post it.

You know (69 0ur tea)  Paul  had told me the Eastwood detail grey looked exact.  Here's an update of working on my engine compartment, notice the detail grey on the steering shaft.  I think he may be right and I'm going to shoot the right bucket tomorrow and see how it looks.  I did a small piece and showed it in the first thread listing and thought it was to dark, but maybe not?  I'll post a picture of it, when it's done.

Did anyone notice there is no line between the movable headlamp door and the connecting grille center?  Looks like Dodge did some fancy air brush work in their promotional pictures.

ohhhhh, you mean the gap in the silver "pin-stripe" on the door???  I see what you mean, i see in the pic though the door itself, and where it ends, but maybe they touched up the pic to make the silver line solid, or the pic is very poor quality.  Also, a brand new grille that's tight and fits perfect, may have less gap than a 40yr old grille?
