Foreign Gas Prices

I read somewhere today that the cost of a gallon of gas in the UK was $9.40 in American dollars.  Thats about 3 times what it costs here in the states.  So my question is, why the disparity?

Do other countries pay different amounts for oil?
Is it because they tax it more?
Does it cost more to refine it there?
If we lived in those countries, whom should we blame for the higher prices???

I was just wondering because we complain about $3.00+ a gallon gas, but it actually seems like we've got it pretty good compaired to some places.

Higher taxes AND there are few refineries in Europe so they have to import refined fuel instead of just oil. When everyone over there started switching to diesel we started shipping all of our diesel fuel that direction (which is why it still costs more than gasoline here).

UK gallons are 4.54 litres, US gallons are 3.78 litres
its about $9 for a UK gallon roughly $7.60 for a US gallon
our tax on petrol is about 400% on the original price

Yeah, the gas prices are through the roof here in Europe right now.. I've had my license for around 10 years now, and the gas pris has more than doubled here.. (Denmark)
We're around 8$ for an us gallon at the moment.. I definatley picked the wrong time to get a musclecar...

Much of the "free" health care in some European countries is paid for by a portion of the gasoline taxes.

We have lpg ( gas ) over here it just went up thirty cents a litre , the goverment gets the most bang for your buck , it goes towards roading healthcare etc ( over here if you have an accident broken leg ,car crash etc  the govt pays 80 per cent of your wages until you are able to return to work etc )

What really annoys me is that when crude oil prices go up we pay for that increase straight away at the pumps even though the new oil price is on barrels sitting over in the middle east etc

I was in Amsterdam on 10 Jan. and saw 1.48 Euros per liter posted at a Shell station. Ouch. Here in Egypt, I can still buy premium for less than a buck a gallon.

Europe & America just chose very different ways of handling their fuel in the 20th century.  There's benefits & problems with both ways. 

On the surface it sounds like American people are getting a hell of a lot more out of the gasoline deal than Europeans, but IMO that's really oversimplifying things.  Our lifestyle & countryside has been severely damaged by the mass overusage of automobiles in a whole bunch of ways that theirs has not.

I can't understand either the higher prices in Europe, being half of world bigger oil Companies are Europeans. 

Gas ( and gas-oil ) prices are a BARGAIN down here due the Goverment subsidies. Since train rails are practically unexistant down here, and those what exist are to Iron Industries on the south ( Venezuela not only produces oil, also is a great source of Iron and Bauxite ), maybe that could be the reason to keep lower gas prices.

Based on today's price and the current exchange rate, we're paying $4.50US per gallon, and that's for the low grade stuff.
It's somewhat interesting, as we (Australia) have numerous refineries and a huge supply of oil, yet we still seem to be effected by the middle-east oil situation. But hey, that's no different to anywhere else, right?

Yep.

Crude oil usually goes out of the ground and into the worldwide oil market before going back to its original country's refineries.  So a bunch of countries can be oil exporters and still have gasoline price flucutations because of trouble elsewhere in the world.

So can I assume that their prices tripled during the same time frame as ours?

Also, I've heard a lot about how America needs more refineries since a new one hasn't been built in 20 or 30 years.  If we did build a few more refineries, how would that impact our prices at the pump?

It sounds like Australia is oil independent but its prices are still global.  If thats true, would making America less dependent (or completely independent) of foreign oil make any difference at the pump?
