Which crank damper and why?

I'm looking at the selection of ATI Super dampers for an internally balanced big block and wondering why there are so many? So, what factors do you need to take into account when choosing one? I'm thinking, the heavier the damper the more efficient it would be at soaking up the harmonics? No doubt rev range comes into it also, is the bobweight a consideration? . Also, why the different diameters? Ally or steel?

The damper choice is driven by application, street or race.  Race you probably will not need a fan pulley so pulley clearance is not in issue, the opposite is true for a street driven application.  Timing chain cover clearance is another potential issue.

My car is a 68 Charger R/T with an engine driven fan and stock timing chain cover on a 512" stroker.  I went with the BHJ unit from Mancini http://chucker54.stores.yahoo.net/bhjdynamics1.html.

I think this would be your ATI application:   http://chucker54.stores.yahoo.net/atipepr1.html

The Summit Racing "house brand" balancers are excellent units. These are sfi rated to 18,000 rpm and accept all stock lower pullies. The nice thing about them is that they are stock dimension so there's no pully alignment issues to contend with. They have a 60* scale for easy timing adjustments and are marked every 90* for easy reference when doing valve lash. The stock dimension means that they work great with a stock timing cover.  :icon_smile_big:

These are made in Australia by Romac and are top shelf quality. I have one on my 446  :2thumbs:

Just for the record I have the Internal Balance Damper from BHJ not the external balanced unit I listed.  Apparently Mancini doesn't carry the Internal balanced part any longer.

Ron, I was thinking of getting this one for my street driven 440. Will this also work with stock pulleys and timing cover ?

A friend of mine has one of those Summit dampers. While I agree it looks to be a quality product and he has no issues engine wise, that silver finish is murder when you are trying to set the timing in daylight, can hardly make out the marks at all. I shot an email off to ATI and they recommended thier 3 ring aluminium shell damper 917475E (I have an Indy front cover), It's a good bit lighter than the all steel unit. The other thing I am trying to achieve is getting as much weight out of the front end as possible, another 100lbs and I will have 50/50 weight distribution. I'm making the 400 based stroker as light as possible and I'm hoping to save the best part of that 100lbs over the iron headed 440 I have in thier now.

Just set the timing at 4am...you'll be fine

ATI is good stuff too....i wouldn't have a problem using one of their dampners. There might be some issues with pulley allignment from what i've heard.  :yesnod:

Hi Alan, that balancer looks like it should work fine and is listed for an internal balance 440. I can't say for sure about the pulley alignment because i've never tried using one. I know for sure that the one i linked to above will work.

Thanks Ron, I'm getting several parts for my car in the next couple of months,( getting it ready for spring and the 08 season) cam,mufflers,x-pipe to get better perfromance :2thumbs: trying to keep the cost down as much as possible and still get good parts, the balancer you linked is a little more then I want to spend and my car is only street driven and I don't plan on racing it.

                                                      Thanks, Alan

There's always 440source if that price is more than what you wanted to spend   :shruggy:   http://440source.com/dampers.htm
I haven't heard anything bad about them but maybe that's because I haven't heard anything about them either.

I'd stay clear from any fluid deals myself.   And anything made by CAT.

The Summit brand stuff is pretty good.    Their timing chains are Rollmaster made by the same Aussie outfit that makes those balancers.
