What is this firewall electric part for?

It's the electric box that has a plug in it just behind the spring in this photo on the firewall.  I thought it was the voltage regulator untill I got my new one in the mail yesterday.

The one I have is covered in crapy spray paint and I want to replace it with a new one.

That is the ECU or eletronic control unit, part of the ignition system

The black box with the green letters on it should be the volt regulator.
